    Additional Fees - 8820

Error in title, I meant 8320...

    A few questions:

    1) I am with Tmobile and to use the WiFi for internet surfing would I HAVE to get the hotspot at home which requires a monthly fee?

    2) Do you need it for making calls over WiFi?

    I currently have a 8100 and want a fully qwerty before I get carpel tunnel (5000+ texts/month)

    3) Would I have to pay anything monthly to use the Curve?

To answer your questions in general...

    1. Nope - All you need is your regular BB data plan
    2. Nope - Works fine without, if you sign up for H @ H your UMA minutes are free.
    3. Nothing different than your 8100 - they use the same plans.

However - if you are looking at the 8820 and not the 8320 you will most luikely not have UMA calling since TMO is not currently supporting the 8820 so far as I know.

    Hope this helps!

What if I don't have a blackberry data plan? Can I still use WiFi for web browsing over an existing network, like my home wireless internet?

I am not positive about this. Some reports are no, however I think that may be due to not having a browser on the phone, as I was able to browse on wifi recently without even a SIM card....If you were able to get opera mini installed on the device it might work.

I don't understand why you would need the blackberry internet service to use WiFi... I understand having it to make calls with UMA (which requires hotspot apparently).. but for regular internet.. wifi is wifi... someone correct me on this if I am wrong.

For one thing if you dont have BB data the service provider - in this case Tmo - doesnt send the service books you need to get a working web browser.

Hard to browse without it. You would have to look into third party app

All the @home add on does is make your calls on WiFi unlimited. You can call over WiFi without it.

I just spoke to a Tmo rep and she said that I would NOT need any internet data package or anything at all to use the internet via WiFi or to make calls that DO use minutes over WiFi...

    Is she wrong?

The calls are not an issue if you have a 8320. She is not wrong. Wifi surfing on the other hand...you have to have a browser as we have posted....without a data plan you most likely will not have a browser on your phone.

Opera may be an option...let us know how it works out!

I will also ask one of our TMO CSRs to take a look at this thread and comment!

ya the tmobile reps told me tons of WRONG info as well.

the wifi to surf isnt that hot, you need to use teh wifi browser built in. go to the browser and change options there to wifi browser, use the "go to" on the menu for sites.

you will NOT be able to check gmail without the data plan though.

if the internet was 10 bucks a month, id pay it. but 20 bucks a month i wont pay for the edge service. so i am kinda disappointed so far.

I don't understand. Why won't you be able to use Gmail? lol

If you can use wifi to surf, then just go to gmail.com... ? I don't understand.

They told me wrong info before too. I usually call a few times to talk to different reps.

ALso, i don't have a 8320 yet. I am asking questions in order to see if It's worth it over my pearl. I do want the qwerty keyboard so that alone is a plus. but I don't have a data plan or even need it for the email.... but the wifi would be nice...

MY issue is that... I don't want to buy the phone and find out i HAVE to pay the $20/month for the data plan inorder to use the WIFI... That's my main concern... if that is really true... then it really isn't true WIFI. And i heard people say u don't need the data service if u get the "feature enabler" when u call tmobile on the phone...

without the data/email plan you can't get the good ol blackberry email.

To a lot of us the idea of a BB with no Data or email is, well, crazy. There is so much you can do with a BB with full service why would you not want it? But some people don't and that is cool too.

    GaryF thanks a bunch!

Melissa... that's a good question. Blackberry's are known for their email and data services but with my Pearl I had all of that and I really didn't need it enough to justify a $20/mo fee. However, if in the future I do decide that I do need them, I can always upgrade.

    Re: Additional Fees - 8820

    Bo,

You have to remember, Wi-Fi is nothing more than a technology to allow you to connect wirelessly with a computer's network. It is not designed with the sole intent of getting on the internet. You can have wi-fi service with no internet access at all (although that is rare but not unheard of). Since blackberry's were designed with the intent of connecting to a blackberry server for all data purposes the browser is disabled until it has the correct service books sent from that server. The wi-fi that was added to the 8320 is more for UMA services than for data services. Many people in here have stated that they haven't seen a true difference in speed of connection for internet in comparison to the compression that is already provided by the blackberry server (or Opera server) over Edge, of course that varies from person to person and network to network. I would recommend (if you do wish to use it without any data plan added onto your account) downloading Opera and using it for internet surfing over wi-fi if you decide to get the 8320.

    Zo

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~okay sorry it took me a whule toget this I had to put my bb on silent. Out to an important dinner. So here's the deal. The wifi can still be accessed without the data services. Wifi is just a tool to connect and increase browser speeds so there is no additional charge for it at all. It won't use any minutes and it won't charge differently. However if you do connect and try and check email it will be a ittle difficult to access email from certain accounts with how they are set up. I know that it is perferred to get the data services to reach the maximum performance of your blackberry. As a sales rep I see a lot of people who buy the device without the data services and aren't happy with it. With the curve you won't have access to instant messaging. Mms email or web browsing. Also if you are eligible for best pricing on your upgrade to the curve then you will forfeit the mail in rebate if you don't keep the data services. You have to realize that the data plan just isn't going to give you email and web browsing remember that.
