    it could be interference. either something interfering with you receiving the signal (like something else that transmits a signal of similar frequency in your own home) or maybe the person you are talking to is getting interference trying to transmit the signal (something interfering on their end)

    just an idea

    thanks for the idea... i've experienced this everywhere though - calling landlines, cell phones, my voice mail. standing still with 5 bars of service or in a car. northern california (SF) and southern california (OC).
