8320 TMo non-BES data service connection trouble

Please forgive me if this is already settled somewhere else, but after a couple of different searches & scans of the TMo carrier forum and the 8320 device forum, I couldn't find the answer.

I'm an individual user with BIS on my Blackberry Curve 8320. Email is working okay, as is access to the t-zones. But all other browsing is strictly hit or miss... mostly miss. I keep get the "mobile data service unavailable" "contact your administrator" message.

How can I fix this? I used to use a 7290 on a BES setup (also with TMo) at my job and loved the combination of voice, email and browsing worldwide... but this current situation is driving me crazy.

    Thanks!

    Stan,

It sounds like a signal issue, not the device. When this happens are you in an area with a poor signal? Lower case edge vs EDGE? Also I see you have an 8320 - are the results different with a WiFi connection?

    Gary,
Thanks a bunch! Sorry I forgot to clarify all that in the original post. It is signal type/strength-independent. I'm getting it right now on UMA, seated 4' from my wifi router (H@H works great for voice/email and some browsing), but also get it when on EDGE and when there is a full set of bars.

Well....You might try and check your default browser option. Do you have it set to Blackberry Browser?

    Thanks, Gary!
When I go to browser > options > browser configuration it says Blackberry Browser is what is selected.

Try changing it to "Internet Browser" and then see what happens.

Well, I didn't do a full/battery-out reset after making the change, but at this point I get the same result with "internet browser" selected that I got with the "blackberry browser" selected: a long, long wait with the "requesting" message at the bottom of the screen, followed by the "unable to connect..." message.

The site you are trying to get to is one you visited before on the older unit or is it new?

Yes, there are lots that fail... starting with Google, of all things.

By the way, just to be sure, I pulled the battery out, waited a minute and replaced/restarted... and the result of a Goto www.google.com request is the same l-o-n-g "requesting" wait and eventual communication failure.

I get all the t-zone sites okay, as well as the pre-fab bookmarks (like mobile cnn.com).

If anyone else looks at this and cares how the story ends, here it is: I spent some time with a TMo rep today. I had to shut down the 8320 so that she could reset something on her end. When she did, I had full access to web browsing once I had reset the options>advanced>browser>default browser to t-zones (instead of either blackberry, internet or wifi). The device is now working fine on my HS@H wifi signal.
