    Storm Survives Fall

Ok so yesterday my buddy and i were at the mall. We both have VZW 9530 Storms and love them. His phone has the ZAGG Invis-shield on it and mine just has a verzion screen protector. His phone rang and he went to answer it out of the holster on his belt and the storm slipped out of his hands and landed on the tile floor from about 4 feet up. The back cover flew off and the battery came out.....and thats it. He put it back together and there are no problems to report. It is working fine and there are also no scratches dings or dents. Now just for comparison my girlfriend has a vzw LG EnV2 and she dropped her phone on the tile floor in office depot yesterday from about 2 feet and the internal screen stopped working. That phone has no touch screen nothing fancy and it is pretty thick and feels well built. No if that happens to that phone and not to a storm i think that is a true testament that RIM has made a well built phone.

I agree. I dropped my storm while pulling it out of my holster to answer a BBM page, and when it hit my grandmothers floor, the battery cover came off and that was it. My heart stopped for a second, but when I inspected it, no damage done!

very lucky guys !!!! Haven't heard many reports of drops or problems, but I would think that the sides would be prone to scratches and damage when dropped. My bold has some damage on the bezel from drops.

I have dropped my storm before by usually onto soft surfaces or from not that high up. It has a few minor scratches on the sides and on the back cover some of the black coating has rubbed off but other wise it is as good as new. I am thinking of buying one of those hard cover cases that verizon sels. they seems to work pretty well.

Dropped my naked Storm onto concrete, minor ding in the silver bezel, no biggie. Naked storm fell onto grocery store tile from a shopping cart cup holder, no marks (I keep tabs on how much I spend using the calculator).

BlackBerry's do seem to be more durable than most phones. I rarely see them come into my store with physical damage. However I still have to think that you got lucky. Who knows if your phones happened to land on a different part what would have happened.

If you are someone that has the drops, I would look at an otterbox case. A layer of plastic to wrap around the phone (keeps dust and dirt out of the speaker and keypad(, then plastic clips over it (like the pastic shield in a way) and then rubber wraps around the plastic and goes in a belt holster. Seriously heavy duty and not as bulky as you would think. I've seen people throw an 8830 across the room onto the floor just to demonstrate the case. Anybody with a newer blackberry in Southern Ontario can message me and I can get you more info.

I should also note, I don't work for otterbox or anything like that. I just started to carry them in my store a couple of weeks ago and I think they're great cases.

I got the Seidio hard case for my Fiance's 8330. I constantly drop it on tables to demonstrate it's durability. I just have yet to find the perfect holster/case for my 9530.

It's always a shock factor when dropping a phone. During the months I owned the Pearl, it fell from my lap twice, onto my foot before hitting the floor (whew!) and I had rubberized covers for it which I believe help a lot. Luckily, I haven't dropped the Storm and I would like to think that in addition to being cautious that the rubberized cover helps keep it in place. This phone is one I would NOT like to screw up!

The Bezel on 8900 and Storms is definitely tougher than the one on the Bold ...
It doesnt chip like the Bold's does.

I launched mine trying out the new BB Storm Lightsaber app.......luckily it had a soft landing. I think that the screen has a shock-absorbing screen. That's why is shifts back/forth/up/down when finger is depressed on screen.

Ohh, ouch. If I had dropped my Storm, I would have literally CRIED!

It's reassuring to know that the Storm is that durable.

Dropped mine the day I got it, onto the pavement after walking out of the store. The case opened up and battery flew out. Same as everyone else here, nothing happened to it - no dings,no dents, nothing. After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I went and bought the otterbox defender series case for the storm. The case is awesome - completely protects the entire phone. I was taking that chance again.

Sorry to say it but that is funny! As soon as i saw that app come out i immediately thought of the Wii controllers being launched at tv's all across the world! Thank god it had a soft landing.....imagine if it had hit your tv or a wall??? you would be crying just like any one of us would. Maybe they 9520 will come with a strap that you hook to the phone and wrap around your wrist like the Wii controllers now do. Just some food for thought.......

How easy is it to press the buttons? the send and end keys according to otterbox's web site look kind of tough to press. How much bulk does it add to the phone?

The buttons aren't too bad to press, a little bit tough for the send and end, but not horrible. The bulk of the case is slimmer than the usual otterbox style, but it does add some bulk to the phone. It's a great case if you want total protection for the phone. In my line of work, this is something that I need, alot of bumps and jolts - perfect for situations like that. It's not the case you wanna use if you're an office type or businessman. It's not something you can easily slip in and out of your pocket.
