From what it seems, the agps will be locked to vznav but the regular GPS will be available to third party apps. A little slower locking on to your location but at least vzw is trying to take a step in the right direction.~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

I'm with telus currently and if VZ does it telus will do it.

On my curve 8330 I went through the same lies of telus refusing to admit they locked it. But magically when I loaded telus navigator it worked perfectly.

To address the point of gps in a phone vs. Buying a portable gps such as a tomtom. The point is work on the road changing vehicles constantly. I personally just enjoy carrying more than I need to. The convienence of just using my phone is unexplainable. And for those who don't the gps regularing. It is a fantastic tool for those occasionally get lost. Especially if I was in another country.

Also as a business practice selling a device with a feature by miss-guiding customers isn't a great way to survive. Leads to lost of pissy people and drives them away.

    Prove it.
    You have two ears, two eyes, and one mouth;
therefore, listen and observe twice as often as you speak.

Are you kidding? I hope you're right about it being unlocked, but it's Verizon we're talking about here.

They'd charge you for every screen rotation from portrait to landscape if they could figure out how.

Their service is slightly better... maybe... than ATT and it all depends on your region. Out of principal I'm willing to give up a little service so I can do what I wish with my phone.

I just had to laugh at this. I can't for the life of me figure out why people put up with such restrictive policies? If it's that big of a deal, buy an unlocked phone and avoid the whole mess...
    As always, just my opinion...

Does anybody have any real details about the GPS now that the release has been set?

From my understanding, GPS is unlocked, assisted GPS is locked to VZNav.

Standard GPS (takes a few minutes to sync with satellites) should be usable with third party apps like BB Maps, Google Maps, etc...

Assisted GPS (gets location faster using cell infrastructure) only usable with VZNav.
(although wouldn't this mean the device would have two GPS chips built in...?)

I could be wrong on this, if anyone else cares to chime in, feel free.

I was told by 2 different Verizon reps at the "First Touch" event in Pittsburgh that the GPS would be unlocked. 1 of them said it would be unlocked at launch while the other said it would be unlocked in a future firmware upgrade. At least they were consistent in saying it was going to be unlocked!!!

There you all go playing with me heart. Is that unlock for all devices or just the storm?

Lets just hope its unlocked at launch. I've been waiting for a firmware upgrade for my 8830/Verizon since it went it on sale. I was infact told that it was unlocked when I did my early corporate order. Nada. Therapy and these forums have helped me come to the realization that it will never happen.
