Storm and Phone as Modem (Tethering)

    Hey:

For those who have BlackBerry Storm with Verizon -- when you tether the BB to your laptop to surf the internet -- does your Storm stop sending/receiving emails, BlackBerry Messenger, etc...Other than SMS, of course...until you disconnect the tethering function?

    Let me know.

    Thanks!

As long as you don't get a Voice call, you will recieve the rest of your messages and such (emails, PIN, etc...) whilst tethering.

Is that confirmed? Have you tried it yet? My old Sprint BlackBerry 8330 does not do that. It suspends all functions such as emails, BlackBerry Messenger, etc while tethering. When I end the tethering, those functions came back alive again. That's why I wanted to find out about BlackBerry Storm through Verizon.

    Thanks!

My vzw 8830 stops emails and such, I can send and receive txt but it causes a slight lag spike on the internet...

If someone calls it goes through but will stop the net but reconnect as soon as you hang out

I have the Storm with tethering and its just like Sprint. kdkng is correct, you will not get emails, BB messanger, or anything that has to do with the Storm and the data. You can send text and recieve calls or make calls but you won't be able to surf the web while on a call.

I called Verizon about tethering and they told me you have to pay to use the phone as a modem. They said it will cost 30 dollars extra on the plan.

Tethering is free with T-Mobile. I almost switched to Verizon until I found that out. I asked on another forum on how to get it for free and evryone jumped all over me saying that it was considered "stealing". I guess it is in the eye of the beholder. Nevertheless, I think I will be staying with T-Mobile for now.

My experience with the Storm and tethering is that while on an active tethering session, I will only receive calls and SMS messages if their is no active data being sent/received. After I terminate my tethering session (e.g. - the phone is out of modem mode) I receive my emails.

The Broadband Access Connect (phone tethering) feature costs 30$ per month, however Its only $15 extra per month if you have a blackberry data plan, and since november 13th they are requiring pda's/smartphones to have data plans.

If you don't feel like paying that monthly fee ... you may want to google SHARKMODEM. It is has been confirmed to work with the Storm as well.

Thanks for sharing. It must have do with the CDMA technology. On my new BlackBerry Bold from AT&T, I was able to send/receive emails, BlackBerry messenger, etc during the tethering session. So that's NICE feature to have. Same true when you're on the phone, you still can send and receive messages via BlackBerry Messenger.

The Storm supports the upgraded EVDO Rev A spec which technically allows for simultaneous data & voice. Hopefully VZW will enable this feature... probably not.

Also, note that you can turn tethering on and off as needed... no need to keep the subscription rolling if you don't plan to use it frequently. VZW will pro-rate the usage, which comes out to about $2 / day.
