I thought that only certain phones will work on certain networks but if the phone can take a SIM card then you can unlock it and put your SIM and it will work?
For example..if the STORM takes a SIM card are you saying it still cannot be ulocked and used with a AT&T SIM card?
Sorry I am a little slow with this but please clear this up for me. reason is because i am getting the BOLD, but!! I really want the storm for my husband and we both have at&T. rather, he wants the storm!

the BlackBerry 9530 (storm) is a CDMA network (Verizon, sprint, etc) device. Operates on a different network than say GSM network (tmo, AT&T).

The SIM allows the CDMA device to "piggyback" on the GSM network whilst roaming in other countries that don't have CDMA network.

The opposite holds true when speaking about an iPhone. You can't use an iPhone on Sprint or Verizon.

ooh ok so just because the Storm takes a SIM card dosent mean it can be unlocked for At&T network.

I was getting ready to ask a similar question. Isn't there a GSM version out there that we could possibly obtain and get unlocked for AT&T? (I heard mention of other carriers worldwide offering the storm but don't know if they are GSM or CDMA?)

It is dual band, but the gsm bands are Europian and will not work us gsm bands. Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) Same is true for Sprint/VZW world phones. They have both radios (cdma & gsm) , but will not fuction on us gsm bands.

9500 will work on AT&T (GSM)
9530 will work on Verizon (CDMA)

    similar to
    8100 AT&T/TMO
    8130 Verizon/Sprint
Keep in mind though, I don't know alot of info about the 9500 series, only what was from the Engadget page

It mentions GSM because with a SIM card it has the ability to piggyback on the GSM network in other countries.

Here is the page for the BlackBerry 8830 which is offered by Verizon and Sprint.

It also mentions GSM for the same international roaming reasons.

Ok first off, the 9530 is quad band GSM. Now right now on the 9530, in network settings if you select GSM/UMTS is searches for and finds a GSM carrier. You will be able to use the 9530 on AT&T's EDGE. Same is said for the 9500. Now there was a spyshot taken of the 9500 with triband which would work on AT&T's 3G network, but they're not making the triband available so far. We still have Rogers to go. Also, with the addition of a triband radio(which it already technically has) would make it a different device in which "exclusive" wouldn't matter.
