My 6 minutes with the Storm at the First Touch Verizon event

I really enjoyed the First Touch event Verizon held today. They were giving out five Storms through a raffle ticket contest. I didn't win one I am sad to say. The winners will recieve their devices in 4-6 weeks. I couldn't get any further info on launch date or pricing. Speculation from the reps were that the device will be comparable to iPhone pricing both with discounts and without. Launch date question got me a beat around the bush answer....Maybe this weekend, maybe next weekend due to software issue. GRRRrrrr, not the answer I wanted.

The device itself....Gorgeous. The Storm feels great in my hands, very solid like the 8830. I was actually a little nervous when I first go the chance to play with the Storm. First thing I checked was the OS. The 9530 was running 4.7.0.61, which was still a pre-production build the Verizon rep told me. I was able to browse with ease, checking out Google News and m.youtube. The youtube videos took a moment to load, but when they did, they played full screen, it was nice, a little pixelated since it's youtube though. Watching the sample videos in the device memory was AWESOME. The screen is insanley nice, you can actually watch widescreen mode and enjoy it.

The way the screen "clicks" is really neat, I have used other touch devices, and I prefer the BlackBerry's SurePress over the other device's touch methods. You really feel like your pressing a key in, rather then just a flat UI. The typing was a breeze in suretype mode which is what I am used to anyways, however, I did have to backspace and edit a few times when I typed using the landscape mode. The camera was still a bit slow as well, I am sure they will eventually work the bugs out. The only other negative thing I can say is, it was a little tricky to go through the options screen, maybe enlarging the font just a bit would fix that.

Overall I had a good time with the device, if only I could have had longer :P. I look forward to having my own device to play with in the next week or so.

That's great man. My only question is, does the screen actually click? Vibrate? What is this pattened screen it has? I know u can rotate the fone in all 4 directions and get ur keyboard. I'm just curious what it actually does.

It really does feel like your pushing a button "in" when you select something onscreen. It seems like there is a small vibration below the screen in combination with an audible click sound.

Thanks for the review, Josh! Sounds awesome!

Did you get a chance to read the review posted by Fiddler the other day? If so, how would your experience compare to his?

    Thanks,
    Roger

I was a bit rushed with the device so I couldn't take it through really hard tests. I enjoyed his review and it helped me know more of what I was getting myself into. It lagged only while using the camera and while rotating the device. Other than that, it was just plain cool.

RIM is always great about getting a good OS out there is reasonable time. I am really looking to use that 3.2 cam. My Curve out-shoots my $800 Canon Cam/Corder...I wonder how awesome this cam will be and how vids are.

I totally forgot to check the video cam....oops. I am definetly jazzed about the built in 3.2 megapixels.

Visual Voicemail is going to be sweet. You'll have the ability to save voicemails directly to your MicroSD card, or send the voicemail as an attachment in your email!

They mentioned a service called Chalk (http://try.chalk.com/connections ) for audio and video podcasting. I just signed up to see what that's all about.
