    trackball getting stuck

Anybody else experience problems with their Bold trackball getting stuck? Mine intermittently won't scroll upwards. It will scroll in all other directions, but won't scroll up.

Anybody else experience this? Any DIY solutions?

There's warranty on it right? Exchange it, otherwise, open her up!

I'm sorry to hear that. You can have them change the trackball if you have your warranty still active. If not there's a site where you can purchase trackballs from it's the cheapest around IMO and very reliable. Here's the link: http://cnn.cn/shop/blackberry-81xx83...ll-p-3220.html

For some reason that video tab's not working at the moment. But that same video can be found on youtube. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yvs4VM5d_rk

I've never had to disassemble a bold but I do all the time with my curve (very easy). But i'm not sure how easy it would be for your device. Good luck!

Warning: This may void your warranty. Do it at your own risk.

The Bold's trackball is not easy to replace like it is on earlier BBs. I am a total chicken when it comes to that stuff, I have never opened up one of my BBs yet. Usually working the trackball around really good will free up the debris, maybe a blast with some canned air. I agree that cnn.cn is a great source for trackballs, shipping is slow since coming from china, but they are better quality than either of the US sources I have tried.

Most likely there is dirt or lint somewhere under the trackball that is covering a contact point. Do you carry it in your pocket?

To fix, turn the device off. Press, hold and roll the trackball, first in the direction that it will not operate, then move it all around for several seconds. That should clear the dirt or lint. Next, turn the device on and let it boot. the track ball should work normally. If not, try the procedure again, rolling the track ball for about 30 seconds in all directions. You can also try pressing the ball and directing some "canned" air all around it.

Finally, don't carry in your pocket, use the pouch.

Only thing I have to say on the topic is also...don't but it bare in your pocket, use a holster or some type of sleeve/case while in your pocket. This was happening as of late with my Bold as well and lo and behold as soon as I stopped carrying it in my pocket all's well.

You could probably get the Bold replaced over this but I can almost gaurantee its not an issue with the phone and more related to use/storage of it.

You should try my lick and roll method. Just lick the trackball and roll it around for a bit. It should fix the problm 99% of the time don't get grossed out its safer than opening ur bold up.

I'm sure it might be safer but something like that is still quite variable and poses its own set of risks. I would actually feel less comfortable having ANY amount of moisture enter my Bold.

Somebody posted a picture series on how to change the trackball on a Bold, and I was astounded at the complete disassembly of the handheld being necessary in order to accomplish the task. It is utterly ludicrous for RIM to have affected a redesign requiring such a procedure. Trackball assembly's need to be removed for cleaning on a regular basis simply as a result of their design.
It looks as though the 8900 that I've been waiting for may have the same concerns, and I may just pass it up because of this. Sorry to be so serious, but that's my two cents worth! Will continue to be RIM for life

use rubbing alcohol on a q-tip... it dries instantly and has been used to clean rubber and metal parts in the broadcast industry for years! Works like a charm every time for me. I wouldn't use saliva except in a pinch and only when you can clean it with rubbing alcohol later... saliva has enzymes that are meant to destroy things - and not just dirt or dust either!
