You may be able to contact your carrier and have the number turned off, but not sure you can lock it if it's gone. Sorry this must be a total bummer

Maybe they can stop the bold from being used by doing something with the IMEI number and the pin

The carrier will do that. Have you called them to report it stolen? And the Police so you can get a police report?

Huh? They didn't do anything? They need to block it from being used on her account.

Yes, that is BS. Once you report it stolen, they will tag it and no one will be able to activate it. It will be useless to whoever stole it. I just hope your mom had it password protected...

Well she suspended her account, so it does not work with her number, but they said they cant lock it or stop anyone else from using it. They wont even do a soft reset on it so it will wipe all emails or phone numbers.

Its sad, but most carriers won't react to a situation like this. Be sure to file a police report. With that you may be able to get somewhere with the carrier.

I seem to be hearing more and more that some carriers aren't responsive in these types of situations. Maybe we as a community need to get together and start e-mailing these carriers en masse. If they get a few hundred thousand e-mails maybe they'll realize customers expect them to do something and that their reputation is suffering from doing nothing.

Based on what I've read in the past, my understanding is that in addition to suspending/freezing an account so the thief can't make free calls, a carrier can flag an IMEI as stolen (in which case some unlocking services that check for that sort of thing won't provide a code for it), and can also have the PIN flagged with RIM.

Just out of curiosity, who is the carrier in this case?

If the police really wanted(depending on the tech available in your area)they could catch the thief using the gps and or triangulating using cell towers if the phone is used. But will they consider a cell phone worth the effort(reguardless of the fact that a data phone is way more of a problem than just a cell)to do it.Sorry this happened to your mom.Is she ok(unhurt)?
