    Hi guys...
Please awaken me from my ignorance.
What is the difference, besides the obvious (like accepting a SIM from any carrier) between a locked BB and and a unlocked version ?
Are there possibilities to add software otherwise unavailable on a locked phone ?
Are there advantages in the OS software?
    What else?
I have the Bold v.4.6.0.247. Like to hear from you.

With the Bold for instance locked means you can only use it with att.
But, while unlocking the phone meaning able to put another carriers sim
As u said that's about it right now I have my locked bold but I'm running
.282 software from Rogers and no problems

Just know that unlocking ur bold won't allow u to use it with any carrier. There are some carriers than have a a different service system, and because of the software on ur bold, it just won't operate on their system. There is a post by Chokem about this in another thread. I'm browsing wap, and gimme a minute and I will try to find the link to his post, or if anyone else would like to chime in and give all the technical terms as to why, please do! I know it has something to do with CDMA and 3g systems and what not. Sorry I'm so vague. Ill find more info.

Oh she means that the Bold won't work on a CDMA (Sprint, Verizon or Nextel) carrier even if it's unlocked.

Yes, the only advantage to an unlocked phone, other then the ability to sell it more easily (since it's portable) is the ability to take it to another carrier of the same network type, either GSM or CDMA. Great if you love the device, but hate the carrier and it's an exclusive.

    Ok I understand now.
I'm with Vodafone, and I have two other carriers to choose from here in Portugal. It's Optimus and TMN. And these both work the same as Vodafone. No other choices like in the USA, so my unlocked Bold is good to go. Much the same throughout Europe... when I travel across to you guys which I will be doing soon, I'll have to ask questions...

here is the benefit of unlocking.... if you travel you can use a local carrier. just get a prepaid or post paid account and your good to go. there are some sim cards that work all over the world for a price.... remember to stay with GSM instead of CDMA. currently my mom is on a ATT phone on Tmo. all you have to do is swap the sim card and your contacts are still there.
