If it's unlocked, it should work, not sure about the 3G tho, those frequencies could be different.
I'm french canadian so I can also help you in french, just PM me
UNLESS it is for a BETA OS, it's at your own risk and I won't support it

If you are looking at a GSM frequency then I would say no. To my knowledge Japan does not support GSM.

    Japan has 3G - 1700 & 2100 bands.

    So it will work.

GSM is the world standard. How could Japan not support it.

Both AT&T-related carriers in Japan run UMTS 2100, so the Bold should work there!

    dubai,

Not sure if that was meant to be a retorical question or not, but I have never known any mobile device that was not specifically for Japan work in Japan. Here is an article on Japanese Cellular Service. It is about a year old but plainly states "GSM is not deployed in Japan"

    Gary,

the article is not written very well. It says there is no GSM, however later on it states that there is WCDMA/UMTS amd you can insert your foreign sim card in a wcdma/UMTS phone and use it. Which means that when they say there is no GSM, they mean no 2G GSM, but WCDMA/UMTS is 3G GSM... which they have.

Good site for world GSM info. http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml

Well Japan switched completely to UMTS and shut down the GSM Towers. No Phone will work there except Phones that support UMTS.

So I guess that the Bold will work in Japan.
BTW you can spend me a trip to Japan and a Bold and I will test this for you...

What do you mean shut down the GSM towers???? What do you think UMTS is... UMTS is 3G GSM.

At&t website states that you can roam in Japan with you at&t phone as long as it has the 2100 band.

check out the website of the official world GSM association kids...

Thanks everyone for your input. It appears in answer to the OP, that the BOLD will work in Japan. Great news.

For the benefit of anyone planning a trip to Japan, I think we can all agree that most other GSM devices that are currently in use around the globe will not. For those of us who travel frequently to Asia, It is good to see some devices being introduced that will bridge that gap.

any 3G/UMTS gsm device released outside North America will work in Japan seeing as how 3G/UMTS outside the US is 2100 band. And manufacturers have been releasing 3G models for over 3 years now outside the US. Even basic low end phones coming out now are 3G if not 3.5G.

Gary if you were to say most devices released in North America will not work in Japan... I would have to agree with you. However the Globe, is pushing it.
