    Deleting Preloaded Themes & Media

I always find that editing .alx files is a pain. You have to create a clean copy in case anything goes wrong and then modify a whole bunch of lines, know vendor codes, etc. Deleting preloaded themes is a pain because you have to find them and then add a different vendor code.

There's a much easier way: Maybe a lot of you know this, but I just discovered it, so I'm passing it on. PLUS, THIS ALLOWS YOU TO DELETE PRELOADED MEDIA.

Javaloader can be used to add vendor themes and to delete preloaded themes (or to add or delete any .cod file).

    This requires javaloader.exe: http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...id=452&catid=5

To delete a preloaded them, simply open a command prompt (start menu>run>cmd), and then type the following: "javaloader -usb erase -f XXXXXXXXX.cod" where "XXXXXXXXX.cod" is the name of the theme file you want want to delete. For example, I deleted the crappy Cingular theme on my pearl by typing:

    "javaloader -usb erase -f net_rim_theme_102_icon_240x260_b.cod"

If you have to add back a theme or other .cod file (for example the Cingular theme), copy the .cod file to the folder where javaloader.exe is, and then open a command prompt and type:

    "javaloader -usb load net_rim_theme_102_icon_240x260_b.cod."

It's easy. But beware that you could seriously f%$# up your device. Deleting the Zen theme caused no problems on my 7130, but deleting the zen theme on my Pearl basically bricked the device. But, I simply added it back and everything is fine.

    EDIT:
I deleted the preloaded mp3 file, avi file, and all of the preloaded pictures by typing:

    "javaloader -usb erase -f net_rim_bb_media_240x260_b.cod"

To delete the preloaded ringtones type:

    "javaloader -usb erase net_rim_bb_profiles_tunes_tunebundles_tunes8700g.c od"

The preloaded media still shows in the media player files, but the files don't exist. If I click on a picture it says, for example: "Unable to display file /Device Memory/samples/pictures/accelerate.png"

I freed up more than 4 MB of device memory. WOOT!

    Excellent instructions (Tips & Tricks).

I have personally used Javaloader to upload themes on to my BB
but the rest of the T & Ts are terrific.

    diemon,

There are no custom themes available for Desktop Installation, only those posted on the BlackBerryExtras site for OTA installation. Or those Carrier themse that can be unlocked.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Easiest Method For Adding/Deleting Themes (Including Preloaded Themes)

This is a very useful thread... I would like to delete all themes except for Zen on my Cingular 8700c in order to gain some space...

These are the modules I have listed:

    net_rim_theme_102_320x240
    net_rim_theme_104_320x240
    net_rim_theme_105_320x240
    net_rim_theme_109_320x240
    net_rim_theme_119_320x240
    net_rim_theme_120_icon_320x240_8700v
    net_rim_theme_125_icon_320x240
    net_rim_theme_125_list_320x240
    net_rim_theme_bb_dimension_list_320x240
    net_rim_theme_bb_dimension_today_320x240
    net_rim_theme_bb_dimension_zen_320x240 <----
    net_rim_theme_bb_insight_icon_320x240
    net_rim_theme_bb_insight_list_320x240
    net_rim_theme_blackberry_320x240

I am using v4.1.0.377 on a Cingular 8700c. Can anyone smarter than me (read: everyone) tell me how many of these .cod files I can delete safely with javaloader in order to free up some space?

Re: Easiest Method For Adding/Deleting Themes (Including Preloaded Themes)

JR - I believe that you can delete all of these except dimension_zen_320x240 and Blackberry_320x240, but I'm not 100 percent sure (8700 different from 8100). I would do this: start by deleting the first 8 themes on your list and make sure everything is ok. Then delete the two themes with the words "insight in the theme" and make sure everything is ok. Then delete dimension list and dimension today.

If, at anytime, the theme on your devide looks all messed upo, simply reload the last theme you deleted by typing " "javaloader -usb load THEME FILE". Let us know how it goes.

Much thanks Spam. I really appreciate all of the help you give to people like me in this forum... it is appreciated more than you know. I will try it this afternoon if the phones are quiet here at work and let you know how it shook out. Again, much thanks and take care.

Re: Easiest Method For Adding/Deleting Themes (Including Preloaded Themes)

Spam, got some work shoved off my desk early so I went ahead and gave it a whirl on the first eight as you suggested. Worked like a charm! I have freed up approximately 5 MB, which is a lot for the 8700.

The only snag I ran into was your command line instructions, which say to use -usb as the command to connect via usb port. Apparently the version of javaloader I was using uses -u instead. No biggie... took all of 15 seconds to figure it out.

I really appreciate the help. remind me to dance at your wedding, kind sir... Will take a shot at the dimension list and dimension today later... take care and thanks again.

w00t! I've topped out at 49 MB free thanks to this thread... and I haven't even touched the pre-installed ringtones I don't use. My BB is lean and mean...
