I know what I want to do but when I resize the pics I have they come up poor quality on the bb. Can anyone recommend a good program for it? I've got photoshop somewhere if that's any good for the job?

Photoshop and GIMP will work just fine. the trick is to not let the icons get distorted - check out this post.

Will install and check it out thanks
At the moment I've been using pixresizer to get to 48 x 36 like the standard icons but if its a tall picture like a person then it squashes it up and makes it look fatter. I've tried going to 10 x 10 but it still does that and quality is rubbish. will try again

    Thanks

Gimp is what I use and seems to work great. Yes it does get squatty at times which makes selection even more difficult

Yeah, if you just take the image and resize it, it comes out squashed. You need to resize it keeping aspect, then copy it to a transparent 48x36 template.
