Lightbulb HowTo: Host OTA Links to your JAD Files

I know this isn't the easiest thing to figure out, so I figured I'd put up a little HowTo on getting your JAD files accessible OTA (Over The Air).

What you need to do is edit the .htaccess file in the folder you are storing the JAR, JAD, and COD files in on your server. You'll need to include these 3 lines in it:

    AddType text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor jad
    AddType application/java-archive jar
    AddType application/vnd.rim.cod cod

Then don't forget to put the JAD, and COD files on the server (I added the ALX and JAR files too, but you only really need the JAD and COD files for OTA installs).

My host is running Linux. If you are on a windows server I suspect that it works a bit differently, but I don't know for certain. If someone knows please share with the group.

I then just made a really basic index.html (index.html.txt Sorry had to add the .txt) file in the above directory that had a text link to the JAD file. Then when you click on the link it pops up with the standard install dialog.

    I hope this helps.

Re: HowTo: OTA Links to your JAD Files

I think at most free hosting services it isn't possible to edit the .htaccess file, but it should be possible to upload the jad and cod files even though. Make sure you upload in "binary mode" when you are using a real ftp client. Then - as said by the author above - simply set a link to the jad in your index.html:

    Code:
    <*a href="file-name.jad">Click for OTA Install<*/a>
    (remove *)

This only works if the index.html, the jad and the cod files are in the same folder. If not you have to define the complete URL of the jad file.

It's also possible to place the jad somewhere else as the cod, but for making this working, you have to specify the URL of the cod file in the jad file:

    Code:
    RIM-COD-URL***: http://www.myhost.com/com_plazmic_theme_***.cod
(*** are wildcards for your theme name and a counter, if the cod is splitted into more than one file.

Re: HowTo: OTA Links to your JAD Files

How can I shorten the generated name of the theme?

I've renamed the files, to remove the "com_plazmic_theme_" and just have "themename_TODAY/ZEN/ICON".

I've also changed any references in the .jad file of "com_plazmic_theme_".

    Am I missing something?

you can't change the names once they have been exported. and visitor is right, the .htaccess file has to be in EVERY folder that you have OTA files in...

Are you just having trouble with the OTA links, or does it not work on Desktop Manager too?

They do need to be listed in the .ALX file before you compile.

MrCMonster, thanks for the HowTo, I just started making themes and the first thing you want to do is share (show them off) and today I finally got around to following your instructions, now I got to start working with creating icons...

DjSmooth, I'm happy to hear that my info helped out. It really is fun to share our work with other people.

    Good luck on the themes!

It's just a plain text file so create it if it doesn't already exist. Otherwise just make sure it's got the contents from the post above.

That's about all you need to do. Just make sure that the file is named EXACTLY ".htaccess" it has to start with a period. Otherwise it won't work.

    Hope that helps,
