Ok, itエs a cheaper alternative, but why spend that much when for a few bucks more you can get the Nexus 7?

We have a fire and I despise the slow as hell crappy wifi thing.

Nexus 7 is Google's 7 inch tablet. Pure android.

Yes on the books with either the kindle app or another reader. We use Caliber to convert epub to mobi and vice versa.

The nexus is faster than the current fire. In my opinion there isn't much that wouldn't be. I hate the customized android Amazon uses and would root it if my computer would recognize the drivers.

As far as comparing it to the new fire...wouldn't matter. Vanilla android>Amazon.
As far as the mini gal...er ipad, who knows for sure. I'm guessing if you can swing it the ipad would be the best bet since you are already invested in the Apple ecosystem.

I had the same reaction as del and jf...why bother with the Kindle Fire and its ads when the Nexus 7 is the same price. Just load the Kindle app and you're in business.
