Waaaayyy easier. Although Boxcar does provide some added benefits it really isn't that necessary once iOS 5 arives this fall.

Is there any way to set it up to delete mail on the device only with an Exchange setup, like you can on BlackBerry?

^^^ I'm not sure about the possibility Rog. Maybe BHP can help out.
I've got used to Boxcar. All my mail accounts are there, FB and Twitter as well as PS RSS feed. One stop for everything and it works like a charm... if you want to stay organized and on top of notifications Boxcar could be your answer. And it doesn't clutter your space. It just comes alive when it has something new to show you. Give it a spin...

This should take care of your Gmail.

Go into Settings in GMail from the web and then go to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab.
Disable IMAP access and enable POP (your choice as to which method)

Leave 2. When messages are accessed with POP to "Keep GMail's copy in the Inbox".
Now go into your iPhone and delete your GMail account settings.

Set up "Other" and configure as POP3 account using GMails POP and SMTP settings.
