Article: Is there a phone you would keep forever? Meet Phonebloks
That is the most butt ugly thing I've ever seen.
I already built one 35 years ago out of Lego's.
Sorry Del, not for me.
Got to agree that does look ugly but I love the idea. I'm sure we throw away way more electronics then we can ever imagine and the trouble is most of it is still good. Just not sure this idea is something that would work.
Great. Someone stole my idea. Not really a patented idea as this idea spawns from custom built computers. You may have manufacturers dictating what hardware should be on your computing component but you could build a better unit yourself since as this video states several companies creating all the tools you'll need to build your own ie computer. I do like the idea it's plausible but the same can be applied to cars and just about everything in life why not build the car that will last forever?
jfcooley -- remember, it's a prototype. It can be streamlined and improved massively. But still amazing idea.
Look at the first kindle -- now look at the latest. Big difference.
While I agree that the design cane be improved upon I always worry about modular to things. Some years back I bought a notebook computer which was supposedly made for upgrading. The screen, battery, hard drive, cpu, memory could be changed. Unfortunately the design was changed so I was stuck with a non upgrade. If the design changes then you are stuck.
If it can let me put a USB slot in my phone then where do I buy ?
It's about time something like this hit the market.
Just needs a few jel/protective/waterproof cases made for it and I'm sold !
Perhaps an iphone case would fit it ?
Why do you need a USB port?
For endless possibilities.

*4* I could plug a flash stick into it.
*5* I could plug a mouse and keyboard into it (provided I have two USB ports)
*6* I could charge one phone with another via USB to mini USB.
*7* I could connect directly to a network booster via USB.
The list is endless...

You do realize that some of those things are already possible?
As well as some are impractical.
4,5 are already possible.
There's an app for rooted devices that allows a device to be mounted as a drive on PC .
Not sure I want to tether to a DVD drive, I dont see it practical. I don't see the logic in charging a phone with a phone.
USB OTG allows flash sticks with a dongle.
Lastly everything you are suggesting requires software as well as hardware support.
This is a terrible idea. Sure we get a new phone every year or two. Why? BECAUSE WE WANT A NEW PHONE!
A new phone is a new toy. It has a different form, maybe. Unless it's an iPhone or the latest Sammy. But essentially it's new and hopefully innovative.
Phone Bloks could be OK for those that like to keep the same form all the time. I'm thinking about a stacker pro with his BB Storm, who incidentally did have a very good opinion why this won't take off.
Yeah, buy the thing and some weirdo decides to change the format of the thing. Or the shape.
Bang, there goes the theory.
This has been floating out there for a couple of weeks. Great idea. Never gonna happen though.
Just like I'm sure there's already a cure for cancer, but we'll never see it because the drug companies will never let it be made known.
Too much money to be made.
