Post Review: Plantronics D640 and 6 Headset Sound Quality Shoot-Out

Review of the Plantronics D640 and a shoot-out between 6 different headsets for sound quality. Enjoy! www.barjohn.com.

Today I performed a shootout between 6 different headset units in a combination Quiet and Noisy test all using the BlackBerry 8700. The test set up was identical for both tests.

    The sound results follow below:

    Quiet Test Samples:
    Plantronics D640
    Plantronics D510
    Plantronics M3000
    nXZEN 5500
    Sony Ericsson HBH610
    Flamingo
    Noisy Test Samples:
    Plantronics D640
    Plantronics D510
    Plantronics M3000
    nXZEN 5500
    Sony Ericsson HBH610
    Flamingo
    Conclusion:
On the basis of this sound test and the sound I heard on my end (which I unfortunately have not found a way to record) I would rank the headsets as follows:
    1. Plantronics D640
    2. Plantronics D510
    3. Plantronics M3000
    4. Flamingo
    5. Sony Ericsson HBH 610
    6. nXZEN
When comfort, ease of use and other factors are taken into account, the M3000 and SE HBH610 drop out completely. When cost and sound to the user are factored in, the nXZEN drops out leaving me with the D540, D510 and Flamingo as my top three headsets. Of course, you need to make your own judgments as they relate to your needs.

In the past I owned one of the early Jabra's and I was not impressed. I subsequently tested the 800 when it came out and not only was I not impressed, I found that Jabra's technical support was a joke. Other's on HOF and BlackBerryforums have had the same experience with the company's customer support. Given that I usually have to purchase the headsets I test, I haven't been motivated to spend my money on these devices. The new JX10 has recieved very mixed reviews on the various forums by users. I will be testing the Cardo Scala 500 and the custom AX2 shown on my web site and HoFo. When the new Motorola headsets are available, in particular the Miniblue, I will test it. The same for the new small Nokia.

Just to add to this I have tried two headsets and agree that Plantronics is the way to go. The model I have is the 320, their low-end one but it is still great. The other headset I have is the Motorola HS850 which I really dont like I have trouble hearing anything on it. Just my two cents.
