My 7130c Review after 2 weeks

I've had that 7130c for about 2 weeks now and feel that I have a good enough feeling of it for an objective/subjective review that I would like to share...

I had an old PDA from 5 years ago, and felt it was wasted money (about $500 and I barely used it). But this is different...1) it's a phone. 2) Interface is much easier (Suretype qwerty is easier than typing with a stylus on a touchscreen). 3) My work has changed, so I find the calendar and tasks much more useful.

    Pros:
    - Blackberry features are cool (for lack of a better term). I love being able to send and receive emails as well as the ability to link my work email when I'm away from the office.

    - Web browsing is good...not as good as a computer of course, but more sufficient than with just a regular cell phone with web browsing.

    - PDA functions are easy to use...I am using tasks and calendars pretty regularly now, mostly because it is very easy to add a new task and or event and to sync with Outlook.

    - Address book is great...I have it synced with my personal contacts and business contacts in Outlook. Unlike just a regular phonebook, I have home and work addresses, emails, birthdays, etc.

    - 3rd party programs like Berry411, Piconews, and Googlemaps. Rather than running around and looking for a phonebook, I actually used the 411 program and it worked great! As for google earth, I have a navigation system in my car, so it hasn't come in handy yet, but will when I don't take my car on some business and personal trips.

    - Typing is very easy...It felt awkward at first with the QWERTY layout, but I got used to it in no time.

    - Screen resolution is good...I had a RAZR before and the screen was the same size, but the brightness and resolution sucked. My friends give it a thumbs-up when they were able to look at a porn site with my BB!

    - Size is good...for a PDA/phone, the size is perfect, but a lot of people who have seen my RAZR ask why I went from such a small/thin phone to a "brick". It's not until I explain to them that it's a BlackBerry and show it to them that they go "Oh, I love this phone!"

    Cons:
    - Customization...I figured that with all the technology that goes into the phone, it can at least be a little more customizable...for example the lock screen can't be customized except for the OEM themes. The BB doesn't vibrate+tone...it vibrates then tones. It also doesn't have a tone "reminder", such as when you have a text message...my RAZR would "beep" every couple minutes until I read the message. The BB only has the blinking light reminder option. Even with Plazmic theme builder, you are limited to what you can and cannot change.

    - Bluetooth limited...I have no problem using the bluetooth with my car's system or with a wireless headset, but I wish I could send contacts to the car's phone book...my RAZR had this feature to send contacts over bluetooth so you don't have to manually enter them into the car. Not a big deal, I usually use the handset to dial anyway.

    - Relatively flimsy feeling...coming from a RAZR, nothing will feel the same. The BB handset creaks a lot while using it...the RAZR lasted me 2 years and still looks new, I wonder how the 7130c is going to look after about 2 years.

    - Desktop program...The software for the RAZR let you link up the phone and upload and download pics and ringtones. The BB software only lets you sync and install programs and stuff...you think they could make it a little easier to upload pics and sounds from your computer.

Overall, I am very happy with the 7130c and am glad that I chose it over getting just a regular phone/PDA. My only problem now is that I only know one other person with a Blackberry, so I only have one other person to PIN message at this point.

My current theme is a custom (using Plazmic) clear icon theme with a Punisher skull background (3/4 view of the white skull with red cloud background). My ringtone is currently an MP3 I made of the Knight Rider theme.

If anyone is interested, I made my own page to keep ringtones and pics for my BB at
mysite.verizon.net/mrdeeno/bbhome.htm (it's 7130c friendly!...sorry, I can't post URLs yet, just add http before it to it.

Feel free to download the background images and ringtones

I have had my 7130c for about two weeks as well and I must say, I think you hit it right on the nail! I totally agree with your pros and cons. The only thing you didn't mention and I bet anyone would agree on is something to play videos. I keep on hoping for something good to come like that!

My company is making us get BB's (groan) and they offered me a choice between the 7130c and the 8700. Your review is great! It's getting me closer to the 7130c. I just can't stand the thought of having a stupid BB clipped to my belt.

Does the 7130c fit comfortably in a front pocket?

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~Great stuff. I use both the 7130c and 8700c. I'm glad to hear your using 7130s. This should make your transition to the 8100 when it comes out. I also think that the 8100 will take care of most of your cons.

Yes the 7130 will help make the transition much easier for you and you will be an addict in no time. If you're used to T9 on a regular cell phone, the transition to SureType shouldn't take very long. I only took one day to get used to it. 15 months later, it still has some hiccups but apparently the new device coming to T-Mobile has taken care of that.

If it has the ability to hook up to the Internet, someone will use it to look at porn. Lol.

Yeah, that'll be around 2 years from now!

I spent $500 for my POS RAZR when it came out...i almost swore that I would never get another phone again.

My RAZR sat on my desk for about 10 months after I got it because I was overseas, then when I get back to the states, EVERYONE started getting one...now EVERYONE and their mom has one!

The RAZR was in very good condition for being almost 2 years old (i take care of my stuff), but I somehow talked myself into getting the 7130c...I got a Cingular good customer card for $50 off new equipment with a contract renewal, so the total price was about $150 with the 2 year contract. For the price it has proven very functional after only 2 weeks...compare that to a $500 RAZR that did nothing more than look good on my desk. I gave the RAZR to a friend who actually gave me $50 for it even though I offered it for free.

But after about 1.5 years from now, I think i'll be ready for a new phone and Cingular should have the 8100 by then for a decent subsidized price.

And if it has to be someone, it has to be my friends.

I just hope that T-Mobile also has it for a reasonable price when my contract is due to expire.

Can you post the Knight Ridger MP3 file somewhere for download?
