PinStack Week in Review: Smartphone News, Reviews for August 14, 2009

TGIF Everyone!! This week was Christmas for BlackBerry theme developers. Plazmic issued a patch to Plazmic Theme Builder, allowing for Tour and 8520 themes. The biggest gripe after the launch of a new device is the lack of custom themes. I must say that the guys over at Plazmic must have heard our cries because this download came a lot sooner than they have in the past. Within a few hours of the announcement hitting the internet, new themes were popping up! (*new theme forum additions to be added soon!)

Qik for iPhone 3GS now available, still not capable of live 3G streaming
via engadget:So, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that Qik for iPhone 3GS is now available, and it's completely gratis to download. The bad news is that it probably won't do exactly what you want it to. You see, those on Symbian S60 have grown used to a Qik that can actually stream live video to the internet, whereas this app is currently just a "capture and upload" piece.

There are currently no release notes posted on RIM's website detailing the changes included in this release, but likely addresses the problems many users, particularly the 83xx family of devices, have been experiencing. If you tried to upgrade to v1.1 and were unable to or experienced errors messages, this release may be the fix you've been waiting all week for.

SlingPlayer Mobile 1.1 to Bring DISH Remote Access
From jkOnTheRun: "The Sling Media folks pinged me this afternoon to share their latest news. SlingPlayer Mobile v1.1 for iPhone was submitted to the iTunes App Store for approval. Let me get the bad news out of the way first, so we can focus on the good stuff — there’s no 3G streaming support in the new version. You still have to use Wi-Fi to watch live or recorded television from your SlingBox hardware.

    Top 5 Android Apps
The Android brand is growing everyday, along with the number of apps available for this open-source platform. The marketplace is up and running, along with other sites hosting apps for developers. Sifting through them can be quite an adventure, especially when you're looking for something very specific. I've rounded up a few that should fit easily into any app collection and hopefully help you get the most out of your device. I'll be looking for new and exciting apps weekly, so feel free to message me with any personal favorites.

Bank to Offer Check Deposits Through iPhone App

The New York Times is reporting that banking and insurance company USAA will allow qualified customers to deposit checks via its iPhone application. The Internet has taken a lot of the paperwork out of banking, but there is no avoiding paper when someone gives you a check. Now one bank wants to let customers deposit checks immediately — through their phones.

    New Applications (Beta)

    Simon Remix Beta 3
Simon Remix, now at Beta 3, is based off a classic electronic game known as Simon or Simon Says. The goal of the game is to have the computer, Simon, spit out a random set of colors. Then it is up to the player to input back those colors in the correct order. You match them correctly, and you'll advance to the next round with increased difficulty. You get it wrong and ooooo it's game over for you.

Great W-I-R Cherri. There was a little something for every platform this week, so everyone had something to catchup on. Anyone notice Apple and AT&T dominating the news feeds anymore?
