Sony PlayStation phone 'due in October'

Sony Ericsson's new PSP phone would give Android its first real gamers' phone

By Tim Edwards

Sony Ericsson could release a PlayStation-branded smartphone that would give Google's Android operating system its first real gaming rival to the iPhone as early as October.
Engadget claims the phone will be an Xperia series device that looks like a cross between a Samsung Captivate and a PSP Go. This has been taken as evidence that the phone will have a slide-out gaming pad incorporating touch-sensitive controls in place of a keyboard. According to Engadget's source, it is "pretty damn sexy" - so absolutely nothing like The First Post's mock-up (above).
The screen will be between 3.7 and 4.1 inches - compared to the iPhone 4's 3.5 inches. Sony Ericsson seems keen to maintain its pre-eminence in the mobile phone photography stakes, with a 5-megapixel camera likely to be included.
As with the HTC Desire, the processor is a 1GHz Snapdragon. It will probably run Android 3.0 - a major leap forward for Sony Ericsson, which is yet to release a phone that runs anything more recent than Android 1.6.
Games will be offered as part of a new section in the Android Market and should include PSX and PSP titles, including God of War, Call of Duty:Modern Warfare, and LittleBigPlanet. Apparently other Android 3.0 phones with compatible control pads may also be allowed to download these games.
Rumours of PlayStation branded mobile phones are the stuff of myth and legend. But given that Sony Ericsson did eventually get round to marketing a Walkman branded mobile, it is possible Engadget's scoop is the real deal. The site itself assures us: "We have reason to believe that what we've heard and seen is real and coming to market."
