Major new app store to take on Apple, others

All I can say is WOW! Didn't see that one coming...

(CNN) -- Some of the world's largest telecommunications companies have teamed up to create an apps store of sorts that they say will rival Apple's and those of other smartphone makers.

AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and 24 other companies have formed what they're calling the Wholesale Applications Community, they announced Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The store will be designed to encourage developers to create mobile and online applications for all smartphones and operating systems, according to a written release from the GSM (Global System for Mobile) Association, which hosts the conference.
The group aims to create an open platform.

"For customers this means a broader choice of innovative applications and services available on a wider choice of devices than ever before," the group said on its Web site, which was online Monday morning. [Read More]

Mobile operators should stop worrying about the size of their App Stores and start offering incentives to developers to build high quality applications, and then make the user experience to download and pay for these apps as seamless as possible.

Can u imagine the fragmentation this will cause? How many different Manufactures? How many different O.S's? How many different screen sizes are there? How many different specs are there on the devices? How often do the carriers issue updates for their devices and do the Apps still work correct or do the developers have to update their App again?

    Wow, I smell mess.

It's a nice idea but I'm not so sure all those consideration can be put in sync to deliver a easy to use product for us the user.

I should clarify my post a bit. I'm all for it and think it's great. I just have my doubts for many reasons. I guess I will watch and see how it shapes up and who will ultimately control it. It certainly could be a great thing but IDK. There is a lot to bring into line in order to make it work.

Android is already having issues just by the N1. Developers are left making numerous Apps to work on all Android OS's or leaving the older out and simply moving forward from the N1.
2010 may very well be the year we see older OS's or model devices left behind for good. The 2010 device Specs are just that much better and it's early in the year.

It all sounds good, but that many cooks in the kitchen, I really can't see it running smooth at all, considering the back and forth nonsense between the very same companies when it comes to selling their devices and coverage. It just sounds like all of that is supposed to be put aside...

Major hypermarket store selling all goods for a weeny stake in profits.
No software specialists behind this idea. Just a bunch of economists trying for a quick buck!
Probably you end up buying a smartphone and toilet paper at the same time...and maybe an apllication to teach you how they both work.
    Money, money, money...

It's a dog eat dog world. It's sad to see how people will follow on what others actually have knowledge about just to make a buck. Gold rush anyone? Talk about mooching.
