    US Cellular BIS upgrade

As of today, July 29th, 2006, we in Blackberry support have been told that the BIS site has been upgraded from BIS 1.8 to BIS 2.0.

Existing customers will continue as is unless they wipe their device or perform a "Register Now". Either of those two processes are supposed to swap the user to the new site. New customers from today on should always see the new site.

Note, however, that I just did this with one of our test Blackberry devices, and the old site remains in effect so far.

Any USCC Blackberry customers would want to know, I'm sure, though.

If you're interested in some of the changes, RIM has a short article on it, available via their public "Knowledge Center". If you go to RIM's web site, click support, you can get to the Knowledge Center there. Since I haven't posted enough, I can't give the link.

You can search for article KB-04989 there, and it provides a rough overview. I haven't searched myself, but I'd bet there's a ton of good info here, too.

Yes, Thanks for the info. I'm sure there are going to be a lot of calls to US Cellular's customer service about this if a Register Now makes the conversion. Imagine the supprise of a customer that is not informed when they can no longer get to their inbox using a PC, just because they did a Register Now and not knowing about this. Or they can't file emails in their folders if they were used to properly managing their Message List. I think this method of performing the conversion is not very well thought out.

When my carrier implmented BIS 2.0, any current users were left on 1.8. To get to the new 2.0, I had to phone tech support and have my 1.8 account manually deleted by the carrier. Only then was I able to create a new 2.0 account.

And as the BIS is hosted and supplied by RIM, I would expect that this process is the same for all carriers.

(But I've been misinformed before. )

Yeah, I think I was misinformed about the extent of the upgrade. I think it turned out to be just the addition of Blackberry Help, Yahoo, Google, etc. And a little bit of anti-spam protection on the BIS Inbox.

    Re: US Cellular BIS upgrade

I just got and activated my Blackberry on 8-9-06 and I'm assuming that I'm still on 1.8. This comes from the fact that other forums talk about 2.0 enabling instant gmail connections and I'm still getting the 15 - 25 minutes for standard pop checking.

Are there any plans for when 2.0 will be available?

We're pretty conservative about web site upgrades. Frankly, there doesn't seem to be a reason compelling enough to push this to the people in charge of deciding to upgrade.

I'm sure it's much more compelling from your perspective, but we don't get very many Google calls at all, much less GMail.

Does that mean if I call and ask* about this then It may happen sooner? What if lots of US Cellular BB customers start calling about this, will that make a difference?

    *repeatedly if need be.

Thanks for the inside view of the situation.

So how do I get the 2.0 upgrade? I did the register now and it didn't work. Do I need to call and ask for it?

    Re: US Cellular BIS upgrade

Sorry, folks. Looks like I was misinformed. Everything I can find still looks 1.8, even brand new customers. So whatever was done was backend, not a real "version" upgrade.

    Re: US Cellular BIS upgrade

Osiris, It sounds to me like they did the BIS 2.0 to BIS 2.1 additions to the BIS 1.8, without going to BIS 2.0.

    Thanks again.

That's possible, Rcbjr. They haven't worded it that way, of course. If I get some time, I might try to do a feature-for-feature comparison to find out.
