On the average, is EVDO faster then EDGE?

Just wondering if anyone knew offhand which network was faster on the average. I've heard that it's EVDO, but I could be wrong.

Nevermind.. I found it...According to a reference site, EVDO is much faster than EDGE but it's also more expensive.
    EVDO: 700k+ speeds POSSIBLE
EDGE : 200k or so throughput

Sprint is planning on releasing EVDO Rev A in the next few months. On 9-3-06 they released the Merlin S720 by Novatel, which is a Type II data card that works on Rev A, but is also backwards compatible with the current Rev 0 EVDO.

    Capone:

EVDO in Canada is extremely limited in its footprint. Pretty much only the major cities (and the oil patch in northern Alberta). Telus/Bell operate the EVDO only where they think they will sell it en masse.

EDGE is available everywhere that Rogers has service. There is no "fringe" or "GSM only" areas. (Such as with Bell/Telus.)

As well, both EVDO and EDGE (and 1x and GPRS) "salvage" data from unused voice channels. The max speed is theoretical, being when no one is on a voice call, and you're the only device on the network at that node.

I found this wiki article to be very informative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EVDO

(it's also got a right-hand table of links to other common mobile wireless data standards
    articles).

Re: On the average, is EVDO faster then EDGE?

What will be interesting is to see the speed on a UMTS/HSDPA enabled Blackberry, if one is released. UMTS/HSDPA speeds are a lot more like EVDO average througput speeds (even for Rev. A, I believe), and I believe can be properly considered a true 3G technology. EDGE is really a 2.5 technology and is slower.

I've used both EDGE and EVDO devices and the EVDO devices (and wireless mobile broadband cards) are currently a lot faster (as compared to EDGE). Comparisons to UMTS/HSDPA are another story, but since AFAIK there are no such Blackberry devices that use that technology, it's too soon to tell.

Teleco's are not good at discussing this so I will attempt to do their job. Do not confuse network speeds with wireless carriers (ie, sprint is faster than att), that is not the case. It all has to do with the technology in the area you will be using your device. Sprint and Verizon have EvDO Rev A in most of their metro service areas and surprisingly rural areas too. I know this because I install telecom equipment for most wireless carriers in the US. If you see a full page print ad that claims sprint beats att edge that is correct but that is correct but don't think sprint beats att, only att edge service. UMTS is scalable to 14Mbp which is what att has moved to in the last 24 months, although it is currently running at 2.4Mbps(in ideal conditions). Telco's don't exactly lie about network speeds but they certainly mislead people get there business.

Re: On the average, is EVDO faster then EDGE?

Hi ! Do you thinks the cdma will be at the max instead the GSM could be much higher because of the technology? GSM is all over the world with 83% and the CDMA networks it's just a little 17% ... I have a CDMA 8830 and work very good in canada instead the gsm network with Rogers. I'm just hoping to have all the same technology everywhere in the world
CDMA are with ev-do and rev-1's coming
GSM will be G3 in canada ?

    Have a good day

Re : On the average, is EVDO faster then EDGE?

Rogers just confirmed that they're HSDPA (3.5G) is started on strategic place, Alberta mostly since their technology research center is over there, but don't expect a full coverage before at least 2 to 5 years depending on the area and sorry to be the fun breaker, but the 5 years will be mostly for the Quebec since Rogers doesn't invest a lot in that province 'cause they don't that much customer over there
I'm french canadian so I can also help you in french, just PM me
UNLESS it is for a BETA OS, it's at your own risk and I won't support it

Re: On the average, is EVDO faster then EDGE?

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~Yep evdo is considerably faster than edge. I have an 8830 from Alltel with EVDO, not rev A but its adaquate. Here is some of my highest speeds achieved thru jbenchmark.

    Download speed: 718 Kbit/second
    Upload speed: 112 Kbit/second
    Response time: 172 ms
    First connection time: 1190 ms
    Testing took 18 seconds
    Traffic generated: 568 KBytes

    Download speed: 702 Kbit/second
    Upload speed: 112 Kbit/second
    Response time: 193 ms
    First connection time: 1375 ms
    Testing took 35 seconds
    Traffic generated: 760 KBytes

    Download speed: 697 Kbit/second
    Upload speed: 104 Kbit/second
    Response time: 196 ms
    First connection time: 1361 ms
    Testing took 19 seconds
    Traffic generated: 568 KBytes
