I tried ET and Pdanet without success for some reason already but will try again as I did it in a hurry and may have simply overlooked something....

Like I told the Cspire rep, I don't need the phone for movies, surround sound or anything like that, just to handle calls, text and if possible to tether my laptop so I'll see if I can resolve the tethering before I decide to kick it to the curb...

EDIT: Ok, I'm using EasyTether as we speak to type this along with about 14 other tabs loaded lol. I simply wasn't waiting long enough for the PC to search for drivers, etc. I still would like to find a wireless option if possible (without rooting) using an app but I still have to keep searching for that.

I can see how these phones with the larger (almost too large ie 4.3"-5" screens) displays, dual and gasp! quad core processors could be the poor man's tablet or perhaps even a netbook replacement but I simply don't need anything like that so I may just hold on to the Galaxy, root it eventually if I feel the need to tinker. I don't want to go any larger than the Galaxy's 4" screen plus I tend to hold onto things as long as they'll last. In case I didn't already mention it, this is my 4th phone in 12 years. The Hero lasted 1.5yrs, disappointing, before that I had an LG CU400 flip phone for a few years and before that, the mighty Nokia 6100 complete w/stubby antenna! I might even pick up a cheap extra Galaxy down the road in case my current one dies lol....
    Hey niceguy,
as far as I know, the tether option has been disabled on the Galaxy Showcase since CSpire got the phone. I'm actually surprised to hear that the X2 has the option enabled, but I have heard that CSpire is planning on offering a tethering plan at some point.
The only wireless options for tethering that I am aware of only work with a rooted device, but it's no big deal to root the Showcase. I had good luck with Wireless Tether for Root Users, although I haven't needed to tether in quite a while. I'm actually running Ice Cream Sandwich on my Showcase now, but haven't played with tethering on this ROM.

Ok thanks for the confirmation! It's so crazy since they're one of the few that allow unlimited data and wired tethering, sheesh...Yeah, my brother streams Netflix using his phone to his upstairs projector to watch movies and shows, very tempting!!!

I'll probably root this phone at some point to enable the wireless tether...I've been fooling with and building PCs,etc since my parents first PC, an Amstrad 8086 with 8087 coprocessor, so I'm not worried about the root haha!!

EDIT: Let me ask you, why the upgrade to ICS? Are there any definite improvements to performance, etc other than the facial recognition feature? Just curious...

Definite improvement in overall performance with ICS... it just runs much smoother than anything else I've tried. The stock 2.2 and 2.3 both gave me a few problems, and became pretty laggy; same goes for most of the custom ROMs that I tried, other than ICS. I really like the upgraded UI also... big difference from Samsung's TouchWhiz or even stock Gingerbread. Facial recognition doesn't work on this version of ICS, but that's no biggie for me.

Well I'm debating on whether or not I should download the value pack update for the galaxy which is supposed to have some features of ICS whenever it becomes available. The only issue I'm having with the phone is the Google Play Store software which is frequently giving me 'timed out error' messages, annoying....and I have the latest 3.4.7 version. Never had that problem with Android Market....

The Galaxy was around when cSpire did not "officially" support tethering and CS version of the Galaxy has this removed for wireless tethering. I know of several people that just root their galaxy and install an app called "Wireless Tether" and this allows the use of the phone as a wireless hotspot.

I really appreciate the concrete feedback guys, that's what I needed to know. And yes, with that being the case, I will be rooting the phone in the near future. It shouldn't be too hard...

That's too bad about your phone, mine has 2.3.5 and has no issues aside from Google Play Store not connecting properly...then again, I've only had the phone a little over a week lol...

I have the latest CM9 from HERE. The developer Steve Spear is now building them specifically for the Showcase. He's also building a couple of other ICS ROMs for the Showcase as well. You may want to dig around some of those threads on Rootzwiki, and decide which you want to try. I haven't tried the AOKP version, but it's supposed to have some nice options. I've not done any major roaming with mine, but it did work for me in New Orleans over the weekend.

Tonight's nightly build of CM9 is supposed to have some good updates, so you may want to wait till that shows up.

Has anyone noticed connection issues today? They must have made a change in Cleveland or either they are working on the tower. I can barely get a signal in my office and am staying at 1x instead of 3G. Even roaming to the Verison tower periodically.

I haven't used mine much but to answer a couple of calls and texts. However yesterday, my internet connection was nearly nonexistent with google and other sites taking 5 minutes or more to load and no timeouts...May have nothing to do with your issues as I'm in Memphis but it's the first time I've had a connection issue and I was in a heavily populated part of town...

Looks like I might be having antenna problems. I will try some other ROMs besides the stock over the next couple of days. I might have to go on and get an Iphone 4S instead of waiting on the Iphone 5.

Well I decided just to go ahead and take the plunge, and just got an Iphone 4s 32gb. We will see if I like it better than the HTC Desire, but I did really like the Desire. I have a feeling I will like the Iphone a bit better because of the excellent 3rd party support and secection of accessories.
