Does an iPhone need to be jailbroken to be unlocked?

Either way, how does one go about unlocking the device?

Have a potential buyer for my 4S and they want it unlocked.

    TIA.

Thought I replied to this. What happened. Must've not hit the quick reply thing. Well roger you gotta look for ultra snow in cydia. Install it. Reboot. Try a new sim from another gsm carrier and test it. Jail broken is a must for this. Do you have to have it jail token broken to do this not really as some carriers are now offering this option. Dunno if AT&T is. But since your beast is already jail broken go ahead bro

Is this a permanent unlock or only until the OS is updated?

It is permanent until the person decides to restore the phone. If the new iOS is released the person doesn't have to upgrade iOS. I was running 4.3 until a month ago when I decided to upgrade to ios5. But to answer your question no it isn't permanent meaning if the person restores and tries to use the phone it will not work.

Okay, gotcha. Didn't think so. When I see how much it costs to permanently unlock this device I have to gag. lol

I remember unlocking my BlackBerry for a buck. :-)

    Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4S: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 4.0.3; en-us; HTC_One_S Build/IML74K) AppleWebKit/534.30 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/534.30)

I'd you are out of contract your service provider will unlock your device for free.

Otherwise there are a number of sources from which you can purchase an unlock
