so i just got this thing.. and it has blackberry messenger on it.. but i don't have my internet service up... so i'm thinking thats why its not working.. because me and my sister both have a blackberry pearl.. and we cant send pin messages back and forth for some reason its not working?

yes you are correct you will need the BB data plan for BB messenger to function properly.
