    Question PIN Messaging and Hurricanes

I have recently heard that Blackberrys can be used to communicate during and after disasters (such as hurricanes) through the use of PIN messaging. Does anyone know anything about this? Why does the PIN messaging work when the Blackberry won't work to make phone calls? Is Blackberry the only handheld with this capability?

Thanks for any answers you can give. I'm in Florida and it's hurricane season again...

Hi sarahlynne, welcome to pinstack.com! Im in Florida as well so I understand your concerns. Text messaging in general seems to work in some situations where the cell wont, at least I have experienced.

Read here, maybe some more questions will be answered..... http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...=pin+messaging

PIN messaging doesn't work on your carrier network It won't use any call services. It uses data services that are faster and better to deliver

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

As well, consider the proportion of mobile users with voice only to the number of BB (or other data handhelds). I don't know what it is, but a conservative estimate could be 50:1.

Voice and data run on different channels which are most often dedicated to themselves.

A voice call takes far more data (because phone calls are transmitted digitally) than an email.

In the event of an emergency, there are many people using phones for calls, and the system will become overloaded. But the data side just keeps on going because it is not being overloaded (yet....).

That's very good to know. I experienced this on the black out in NY about 2 1/2years ago. No calls could be made. But me and my girl (at the time) communicated thru text messaging. The server always said BUSY when we tried to call anyone else.

Thanks for the info. I am hopping PIN will work in a hurricane. Hubby and I each have it. Might have to convince my mom to get texts.

I dunno. I have this training class I got to miss out on last time because I was sent to Seattle. Its the week of August 7th. We are hoping for a small storm, just enough to close work that week preferable on Tuesday. No damage.... **crosses fingers** Unless I can get sent back to Seattle....
