Ok, what's this PIN messaging all about

it kinda makes sense (each BB has a unique PIN). But there's questions

    1) Exactly how do you message someone BB to BB via the PIN? (How do you send a pin message?)

    2) Does this matter if you are crossing carriers?

    3) Who, by default, controls the routing of the PIN messages?

    3) Is there any extra costs associated with this service?

    4) Is it part of the standard GPRS/1xRTT data services that comes with the BB service from the carrier?

    5) Do you have to run through a server somewhere on the internet, thereby also incurring charges?

Interesting topic .. just dont know enough about it to make an informed decision ..

    Many Thanks in advance ..

    Mike Martin

ps -- Maybe this kind of stuff needs to be in a FAQ ..

    1) When scrolling to compose "new" email, go to compose PIN or Send PIN.

    2) No as long as you have GPRS server and in a country/location that has GPRS.

    3) They are sent via GPRS so the data provider's gateway is used on both user's BB.

    4) Once a BB is 'Blackberry Data provisioned', yes.

    5) No.

Mike. Great questions. I will post a more detailed PIN FAQ to this soon, so check back soon.

    Hope that helped a bit.

    thanks for the reply ..

I've been around telecom for a long time, and a HAM radio op, so networks and comms are familar stomping grounds for me.

So it seems that this PIN messaging is almost like a skytel 2 way -- point to point messaging without going through an SMS gateway (which is good, because it seems that as long as you have an "all you can eat" blackberry data plan, then you can PIN Msg your thumbs off).

Where can I read official RIM documentation on this PIN messaging process and other cool BB stuff? .. The Operator manual is just sufficient to mention a topic or two.

    Thanks Again!

    Mike

Yes. SMS are sent via GSM only. While PIN's are sent over GPRS so an unlimited data account would mean you can sent unlimited PIN to any BB any country at no additional charge.

Trust me this is very important. I use to live in the States and moved to Europe. The first thing i cam across was how many people use SMS over hear and paying for it... At first i started sending SMS messages overseas and $1.50 a pop... then realize i could PIN to my hearts content for free.

It is fast, effective and you get a delivery confirmation.

PIN messaging has saved me a lot of $$$ when roaming. Used it instead of SMS's and sometimes even calls.

I love it. Blackberry Messaging has truly helped me at work. I do I.T. support. I was able to get rid of a cruddy pager.
    Have you seen my stapler?

Was having a conversation using PIN with another user earlier... too bad it's not possible using the BB client in my normal phone (SE M600i). You can receive, but not reply!
