    Hello & BB messenger question

    Hello All,
New poster and almost new blackberry user . Been using a blackberry for a while here and there but now I got my own.

My current Service Provider is Telus (Canada).

My question is.. when using the BB Messenger to talk to other user through PIN #, does it count as my data use? I thought using the PIN# to go from Blackberry to another is free. Same as the E-mail/Messaging from PIN to PIN.

I checked my Data Useage on my telus account and it says I already used 330KB (My account has 0.5MB).

When I called up telus on friday, the tech support person said it was free and I dont get charged for it. After I found the data useage section on the Telus site, I called them up again and the person i was talking to this time said it counts as my data Useage and if i go over the 1/2mb limit, its $30 extra per 1mb... which is a total rip off.

can you guys clarify this for me?

    Thanks!

EDIT - just to add.. I've never used the Web browser on the blackberry or the E-mail (@telus.blackberry.net). I've only used PIN to PIN messaging so far.. thats all!

    Bashar:

    Nothing is "free".

PIN messages, whether in email-form or through BB Messenger, use data. You will also be billed, according to your data plan.

Often, American users of this forum claim that PINs are free, because most / all carriers in the USA have cheap unlimited data plans, so effectively PINs are free, compared to SMS.

I'm on Rogers, but data is data, and if you use your BB for more than just email, you will easily reach your 500 KB monthly limit in likely a day or less.

If you are actually going to use your BB at all, I would suggest getting the 25 MB plan (it may be 30 MB now).

I second that. With a 25mb - 30mb plan you can get by with couple hundred emails a day. I could be wrong but you should be able to get by with sending about 800+ emails.

Re: Hello & BB messenger question

    hey guys,
thanks for the info.. I'll call Telus and see if I can upgrade my current plan later on to this one:

    ----------------------------------------------

Email & Web 60 for BlackBerry
    ------------------------------
    Monthly Fee $60.00
Email & Web 30 MB included (+ 30 MB for wireless modem usage)
    Included Voice Minutes n/a
    Additional Data Usage2 $6/MB
    Additional Voice 25˘/minute
    Unlimited Nights and Weekends $15
    Extended Clock $5
    U.S. Data Roaming $6/MB

    other costs:
    ------------
    Monthly System Access Fee $6.95
    Monthly Enhanced 911 Emergency Access Charge1 50˘
    Data Network Charge n/a

    ----------------------------------------------

it has 30MB, which should be more than enough for a whole month.

I'll be leaving my current plan as it is right now since I get the 3 months for free for Web & Mail. maybe i'll upgrade aftem my current plan's promotion is finished.

thing is.. Why did the person on friday tell me that the BB messenger and PIN to PIN messaging is free?

    Cheers!

My guess is this, as with my carrier, often unless you specify that you have a blackberry and wish to speak to a PDA Tech, you got someone who is unfamiliar with the actual terms of the blackberry data plan. I automatically tell the stupid voice over lady that I want to speak to a PDA Technician, and skip getting wrong or incomplete answers to my questions.

And WOW, $60 a MONTH?? EEK!

$60 / month = the three national wireless companies have colluded together to insure their own "profitable growth".

Wireless in Canada is not nearly as competitive as it is in the USA.

My 200 MB of data, 500 minutes of voice, 200 minutes of long distance, 2500 SMS, and call display cost over $200 / month.

I use about 150-200MB a month. Thankfully I have an unlimited plan.

Hem... I thought $20 bux for T-Mobile is expensive already.
Anyway, does anybody know if using BB Messenger it will use the SMS quota not Data?
    Can somebody please confirm this.

    Thanks in advance

Re: Hello & BB messenger question

    zukutu,

BB Messenger uses Data. It is based on the RIM Network's Pin to Pin Messaging, not the phone service SMS system. It will not be counted in your SMS quota.
