You can't use messenger without a data plan, that is correct. I used email without a plan though....

You have to remember that the Blackberry Mail Add-On is relatively new and somewhat unexplored. As more people use it and more people report back here to us on what features can and can't be used, there will be more informative answers. I wonder if someone could make up a list of features that can and can't be used on that service so that a comparative could possibly be put together and even possibly be made into a sticky for the forums. I know I would be very interested in it especially since the wife and I will be moving back to T-Mobile near the end of March and I may be able to get away with putting her on a Mail only plan instead of full internet.

The reason I can use BB Messenger with BB Email Add On, is because the ADD On is data and goes through the BB servers, it just has internet service blocked.

I understand the why. It is because of the newness of this option, there are still a lot of questions on what will and won't work on the Email only service.

    Hi dartz,

this is actually an added feature from your carrier, not an application. Who is your carrier?

    Ok...you have a few choices...

TMO has the cheapest Data Plan in town @ $19.99 a month for unlimited data & email. They alse offer an email only package for $9.99 a month (check here) which is the type of plan that this thread is discussing. You can also simply activate the Blackberry Feature Enabler for free and send and receive MMS as well as SMS messages and use the OZ IM application that use SMS messages for AIM, MSN, Y! chat clients.

Hope this makes sense - post back if you need more info.

Re: Blackberry Messenger just using Blackberry Mail Add On

GaryF, thank you for the quick and detailed answer. I am a brand new BB user (got it yesterday) and the reason I am using it at all is because I am looking for a most economical way to view documents (incl pdf) and listen to mp3. That's why I am looking for some add on. Frustrating, but it's the conclusion I reached after some research, that it's the only way I can use a pdf viewer... I don't really need email or messaging. Everywhere I look I see "must have active email setup"

    Anything I am missing?

    dartz

How do you plan to get the pdf files on your BB in order to view them? Is this just a matter of wanting to store them and have them available?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not used this myself but understand there is free software from mobipocket that will allow you to convert pdf files, copy them to an sd card, and access them from your pearl. Take a look at this THREAD

I would simply uplodad them from my MacBook via USB. To your second comment, I installed both, mobipocket reader and mobireader. Neither of them work. I suspect it is because I don't have any email installed.
