How to: wirelessly 2-way sync BB calendar with BIS

OK I'm not sure how many people here have taken advantage of this new BIS 2.3 but I love it. Tonight I realized that I can sync my BlackBerry's calendar with my Google Calendar, my Mac's Entourage, and I'm sure PC users can do it with Outlook the same way.

You can create the event on either the computer, or the BlackBerry and do a 2-way sync wirelessly. It's not perfect, but much better than before. When i delete an event from the BlackBerry it did not delete from Google Calendar (although it did receive the cancelation notice), but it DID delete from the BlackBerry when deleted from Google Calendar, or from Entourage.

Here is how I did it, if anyone needs the steps:

First create the event on the BlackBerry, then hit menu, and select "Invite Attendee"

From here select the email address you have from your address book (I have my home email address saved as "HOME", then save the event like normal and it will email the event. It will automatically import to Google Calendar if you use that. If you use Outlook/Entourage, it must be configured to pull from the email address you do the "Invite" with and be running.

Next, to create it from Google Calendar, create the event then on the right side here you see "Add guests". Just enter your BlackBerry's email address and the event is sent to your BlackBerry and automatically imported.

Deleting the event from Google Calendar:

From Entourage (Microsoft's Mac version of Outlook), create the event, then the upper left here has "Invite". Again just enter your BlackBerry's email address and send.

    Deleting the event from Entourage:

**Note: if the email address you invite from the BlackBerry is one of them you have configured under BIS, you will need to create a filter for that one so you don't get duplicate entries when BIS pushes that invite from the new message to your handset.

That's a clever use of the new support for the Invite Attendee feature!

So far this is working great for me and I love it...BUT....does anyone else have the issue of the appointment/event showing up twice in the Blackberry's calendar once it has been accepted?

One thing that I noticed is that you get a duplicate entry in the calendar if you have your gmail account already configured with your BIS and you create the event on your blackberry.

To get around this, I created a filter on the BIS for the gmail account to not forward messages from my blackberry email address. It seems to work great so far!

oh yeah sorry I forgot to mention you need to configure a filter in BIS if the email address you send to for the home PC is configured on your BlackBerry - this will keep you from sending the invite from your BB to your home PC and it coming back to your BB, just like the other issue of gmail when you sent from the BB it thought it was a new email.
I just created a filter that said when FROM equals my @mycingular.blackberry.net under my Gmail entry to not forward to handset.

Great thanks, I will try that. I realized that my issue was that my default email address was my gmail account connected to my BIS, so that was making it a wacky too.

Nice work around Cliff, but I wouldn't call it syncing. You're just inviting youself to a meeting.

This will probably take care of time zone differences as well. I quit syncing w/ Google because my appts were always 4 hours off even though both my blackberry and google calendar were set on EST.
