Cellphone Locator System Needs No Satellite

BOSTON — Wanderers with phones and other devices that have GPS chips can figure out where they are using signals from satellites thousands of miles up, but those are easily blocked by walls or trees. The founders of Skyhook Wireless discovered some alternative navigational beacons: the signals coming from the Wi-Fi network in the coffee shop across the street, or the apartment upstairs.

Skyhook uses the chaotic patchwork of the world’s Wi-Fi networks, as well as cell towers, as the basis for a location lookup service that is built into every iPhone, making it easier to pull up a map or find Chinese food nearby.

The start-up was founded in 2003 by Ted Morgan and Michael Shean, who traveled frequently for work and noticed the proliferation of wireless signals each time they cracked open their laptops to check their e-mail.

Hard to tell where this is going except forward. It would seem that wi-fi locations would be something of a moving, as well as growing, target too because it can change AND grow SO easily.

Apple sure made a helpful (to Skyhook) move by including the software on so many iPhones and iPod Touches.

Whichever direction it goes, I'll bet "forward" is one of them.

    Cell Phone Locator

That's a totally awesome concept, dude. I, as well as many others who own at least cell, need some help in locating it.
Define irony: A bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song that was sung by a band that got killed on a plane. - By a man who is in a movie about those very idiots dancing on the plane he was on.

Good Article JB. I just viewed the Video demo -XPS, works and no doubt that technology advancement is superb. Is it limited only to IPhone or anyway to get this plug-in to other smartphone devices.
