    Hazards of BlackBerry-walking

news.cnet.com: The best way to get from one place to another here in New York, where I'm on a business trip, is to walk. Except that walking has become increasingly hazardous.

It's not the nastily dressed business folks who come up behind you and insist on brushing your shoulder as they waft to another interesting appointment. It's the people walking straight at you, typing into their BlackBerry. (My statistically insignificant research showed 75 percent were BlackBerry users. You know, men in cashmere coats and tasseled loafers.)

It happened to me the first time just outside a Cellulite Center on Madison Ave. A man was walking in full stride from the north, pushing his thumbs into his keyboard as if he was a masseur trying to rid a client of a very difficult adhesion.

Naively, I believed that he had to look up at some point before he crashed into my two-pack. Instead, his BlackBerry Storm put a dent in my duodenum. It all happened in peculiar slow motion, like a Volvo crash test.

He looked up, gave me a momentary stare as if he was heartily pissed that I'd disrupted his messaging, and marched on without so much as an "excuse me."

    That is not funny...

There is a growing number of BlackBerry/duodenum collision accidents that needs to be addressed here. If the BlackBerry is damaged, does that fall under the other person's health insurance or your device insurance?

Ok you got me. I was like what is he talking about. Then I kept reading. I had to talk my wife out of calling the men in white coats because I was laughing so hard.

M son complains all the time that I walk much slower since getting my BB. I haven't crashed into anyone yet, but I have come to a complete stop in the middle of an aisle or sidewalk without realizing it

With your son and your device, you have a line of sight. BlackBerry up close, your son up ahead of you so nothing should come between you two. What you have to watch out for is, people running into you from the sides, lol.

I can't seem to find the link (for some reason...can't imagine why) but I read the Institute for the Blind is branching out and training dogs to help BB owners. They have a special no-hands harness, and will help you safely get where you need to go while you type. They're outfitted with bluetooth and will bark once for sms, twice for e-mail and three times for a phone call (expect third party apps soon that let you customize those alerts). They'll also sense other BB's nearby and exchange, er, information to help you network and stay connected with friends. The best part of all - they're cute and remind you to look away from your BB every now and then.

I thought this line was rather priceless, and oh so true:

OMG, that's great! I would do the same thing - not get out of the way - and I think it's even funnier that people get mad when they're the one's not watching where they're going.

And the "texting areas", only one every 3 or 4 blocks? C'mon, at least one a block!

The ol' ball and chain is really disliking my phone lately, and I don't know why... Recently, he had to guide me by my arm, through the parking lot, because I was responding to a text and rightfully chastized me because I could have been hit by a car.

Normally, I move off to the side if I'm going to type and I never text while I'm driving. It was just one of those moments for me, but I can see where "just this one time" slowly evolves into a habit and it can become a serious hazard.

im a New Yorker and yes, im partially guilty of walking down the block with Blackberry in hand. one difference, i look up after every two words cause cabs hurt!!!!!! Ive been hit by 4 of them back in the day when i was a messenger. and even if people arent face first in a BB hey just dont move out of the way. And dont get me started about the subway commute..........

How about "Blackberry-walking" going down a flight of stairs. I have caught myself almost taking a plunge when I am checking my messages. Going to have to kick that habit before I end up smashing my face, and BB!!!

I think we should work on an app that could integrate the video camera into the messaging windows...kind of like a picture in picture...that way I can text and still see where I am going!

    Developers????any takers???
