    Carriers. The C is Cingular, the g is T-Mobile, and I think the v would be Voda and the r Rogers. There's slight differences in appearance (especially colors) but other than that they are identical devices.

    8703 is the CDMA version for Verizon and Sprint. Has a couple extra features as it came out after the 8700 series.

    SO does it means that I can actually install for my 8707g with another OS from a different version like 8707v and not expect any problems ?

    You can install any 87xx GSM OS on any 87xx GSM phone, as far as I know.

    Re: what's the differences between 8700v, 8700r, 8700g, 8700c?

    My impression is that OSs are sent as entire packages, as opposed to specifically designed for certain models, within reason. When I got my 8700g, I downloaded T-Mobile's 4.1.0.377 for it. (I've since upgraded to 4.2 on that device--) Since then, I've installed the same download (4.1.0.377) to a 7105t and my current 7290. When I read through the blackberry.alx file that came with the OS, it seems to give specific instructions for specific models and/or service providers. Paraphrased, it has several sections in regards tones, themes, etc that say "8700, vendor ID=100, screen type 240x260, then use this theme." Examples:
    <!-- Vodafone filesets -->

    <fileset Colour="True" KeyboardType="Qwerty" Java="1.0" series="7200" _vendorID="118|120|124|130|132|133|137|138|139|140 |143|148|152|153|161|166|167|168|176|188|192|193|1 94|195|196|197|198|199|200|231|234|235">
    <files>
    net_rim_theme_120.cod
    </files>
    </fileset>

    <fileset Colour="True" KeyboardType="Reduced" ThemeSupport="Enhanced" Java="1.0" _vendorID="118|120|124|130|132|133|137|138|139|140 |143|148|152|153|161|166|167|168|176|188|192|193|1 94|195|196|197|198|199|200|231|234|235">
    <files>
    net_rim_theme_120_240x260.cod
    </files>
    </fileset>

    <fileset Colour="True" KeyboardType="Reduced" ThemeSupport="~Enhanced" Java="1.0" _vendorID="118|120|124|130|132|133|137|138|139|140 |143|148|152|153|161|166|167|168|176|188|192|193|1 94|195|196|197|198|199|200|231|234|235">
    <files>
    net_rim_theme_120_icon_240x260_7100v.cod
    </files>
    </fileset>

    <fileset radio="UMTS" Colour="True" KeyboardType="Qwerty" Java="1.0" series="8700" _vendorID="118|120|124|130|132|133|137|138|139|140 |143|148|152|153|161|166|167|168|176|188|192|193|1 94|195|196|197|198|199|200|231|234|235">
    <files>
    net_rim_theme_120_320x240.cod
    </files>
    </fileset>
    Which gives instructions if 4.1.0.377 is installed on a Vodafone device. This is part of the download that came directly from T-Mobile. Also this example:
    <fileset Colour="True" KeyboardType="Reduced" Java="1.0" _vendorID="111|125|229">
    <files>
    net_rim_theme_125_icon_240x260.cod
    </files>
    </fileset>
    Which says if the device has a "reduced" keyboard (suretype), and the service provider is #111, 125 or 229, then use the theme "net_rim_theme_125_icon_240x260.cod".

    So, within reason, OSs are interchangeable between not only service providers, but models. I say "within reason" because, for example, nobody's ever going to be able to install 4.2 on a 6230. My impression is that the deteriminng factor is memory capacity --

    I also don't think it's only GSM where this works, because the blackberry.alx that came from T-Mobile lists sets of instructions for IDEN, CDMA, GPRS/UMTS, and includes the theme for Verizon, etc. etc.

    So, operating systems are designed generally; (4.1.0.377 will work on any 32mb color-screen BlackBerry); and blackberry.alx allows the OS to customize itself both for specific models, and specific service providers. Which is why my one 4.1.0.377 download works on models 8700g, 7105t, and 7290.

    Just some thoughts. I'm really fascinated with this.

    Great post Mark. Good explanation of the handheld code and how / where it sits within the device model scheme.
