Basically, the represent which carrier the 8700 is branded for. C = Cingular, G = T-Mobil, R = Rogers in Canada, V = Vodaphone in Europe.

    Hope this helps.

I really don't think there's a differnce with the phone itself. Just the services, like g is tmoble and c is cingular and I believe the R is for rogers. I hope this helps and if I'm wrong someone please correct me.. lol

G is for T-Mobile because they have the 8700g.

ic coz in Singapore, all 3 mobile SP are using the same 8700g. no logo such as in T-mobile or whatever, just the word Blackberry.

I suppose C is for Cingular, V for Vodaphone, R for Roger, while G is for general. Most of other providers around the world like StarHub, Singapore or Maxis, Malaysia will use 8700g

No, you're not really wrong, functionally they are all the same, but there are some cosmetic differences such as color, keypad shape and the look of the case. Also the splash screen which cannot be changed.

My supposition is that the letter sometimes indicates carrier and sometimes type of service. It seems that Verizon and Cellular One (Both CDMA) use the 8700c while the 8700g is a GSM phone, used by T-Mobile, Cingular's GSM network and here in Bermuda both GSM carriers

I didn't realize that Verizon had an 8700, and Cingular 8700 are branded as 8700c, not g, Cingular is GSM in the states. I know, I have an 8700c on Cingular.
