They are offered by different carriers. THe 8700X is always a GSM model, and the 8703e is always a CDMA.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 8703 does have a GPS and the 8700 doesn't.. not sure tho.

There is no OS 4.2 for the 8703 yet. I think the 8703 does have GPS, but not sure.

The 8703e has been "crippled" with no GPS thru VZW.

Are there any CDMA networks in the UK? If not it wouldn't be any use, even the GPS wouldn't work properly.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~these two units look the same, why can't users of 8703e install the new version? Why don't just make a universal version for all 8700 models that make it better then by carrier. Is the hardware the same in the 2 units?

The hardware is not the same. CDMA uses Qualcom licensed chipsets due to propriatary format. GSM phones do not necessarily use them.

You can always compare devices side-by-side using the tool at Blackberry.com.

Looking the same doesn't make them the same. If you looked at older BB models they all looked the same despite the fact that there were tri-band and quad-band models, GSM, CDMA, and iDen. You can't judge a book solely by its cover -- and that applies to more than just Blackberries.

An 8700 is not the same as an 8703e by any means. They're similar and one is the GSM counterpart to it's CDMA sibling but there is definitely different hardware within. The reason you can cross-load 8700 OS's (not the 8703, 8705, or 8707) is that they're identical internally.

There isn't a universal OS load because that requires hardware abstraction which eats up processing power. These devices are designed with cost and efficient in mind (among many other concerns). Hardware abstraction could certainly be added but you're talking added development, QA, and hardware costs, and a negative impact on battery life. They have to consider all the variables and compromises have to be made.

Network type aside, I want an 8700 with GPS which, ignoring network, an 8703, or am I mistaken?

Re: What is the difference 8700 & 8703e?

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~i got you, so when you purchase 8700 series they are gsm and the rest are well the rest. So why is it that gsm gets all the updates first and we get them later? What are the pro and con when they are put head to head 8700 vs 8703e? Whe I was looking for a bb my provider sprint did not give me much choice in this field that kind of sucked. I would like to know what am I missing out besides gsm network? Also Is gsm network better then our in the us?

    Thanks guys
