Does PUSH work for personal email accounts like Gmail? Or does PUSH only apply to email set up on a corporate server?

Gmail can be pushed to your BB. As can Yahoo, AOL, etc. (not msn though)

MSN? Why would I want nothing but SPAM sent to my BB?

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~BES = real-time push. Usually BES is offered by corporate servers but some carriers offer it too. Need to talk to your provider.

BIS is periodic polling. There is an algorithm that if you are currently sending/recieving then the polling speeds up but through my experiences I have never been able to verify this.

I'm sorry - so are you saying whether or not I get PUSH email depends on my ISP?

No. You will always get PUSH email on a BB. That is how it operates.

BES (Corporate Server) is almost real time push since it comes from your corporate email servers via RIM.

BIS (Personal email) comes via RIM's servers and is delayed about 15-20 minutes, but occaisionally faster if you are receiving a lot of email over a short period of time. Some of the forwarding services, such as gmail, are much faster at hitting your BB.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~Some carriers offer a BES option for extra $$ per month. This may be attractive depending on your needs if you can't use a company BES.

So what's the advantage of PUSH vs. a WM device that checks for email every, say, five minutes?

The BIS automatically polls the POP/IMAP mail server and delivers to the BB. No intervention on the BB at all.

I would imagine that's great for battery life, but I'm wondering if battery life vs. speed of delivery is worth it.

Although I already have a WM device (Treo 700w) and setting up email is a nightmare, so I imagine a BB already has an advantage in that department.

MSN works for all blackberries sans TMO. I had it on my Nextel and it worked fine. Works fine on my boss' Cingular too.

IMHO, the 15-20 minute delay on getting email on the BB is not an issue. Sometimes you get it faster. I can't understand those who say they have to have it right now. If some one wants to reach me right now, they should call.

I can certainly live with the delay, but part of the reason I chose the BB over a WM device is due to what I believed was the quick delivery of PUSH. Also, I'm self-employed, so I'll be using it with my own clients, and getting email quickly is an asset.
