    Instant Messaging on 8707

Can someone let me know if its possible to use the BB 8707V for instant messaging as it does not support TCP/IP and is about to get relegated to substitute door stop!

Sure i can use it as a modem and then get online on my laptop but that kind of defeats the object.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Peter

Have you tried to download free instant messaging software, BB Messenger or Yahoo Messenger yet? Here are the links:

    BB Messenger http://blackberry.com/messenger
    Yahoo! http://blackberry.com/yahooDownload/

I did some reading on the 8707v SMS and MMS is supported according to a PDA Specs Review (http://www.mobile2move.com/mobile-ph...d-reviews.html) so point your BB Browser to the links listed above and see what happens.

You say your 8707 doesn't support TCP/IP. Why is that? I don't know how different the 8707 is from the 8700, but I was under the impression that there was not that much difference. There are several aftermarket IM S/W packages that should work. Check the 3rd Party S/W Forum for IM S/W.

Do you have a Blackberry Data Plan associated with your Account? If not, you will not get any data service at all and the only IM you will be able to use is one that uses SMS for message transfer.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Instant Messaging on 8707

I read a report somewhere that said that TCP/IP is not supported on the 8707 which basically renders it useless to third party apps. I will have a go at downloading the other apps and see what happens and get back to you. Im told that there are 2 differences between the 8700 and the 8707 and that TCP/IP not supported and 3G capability are the 2 differences.

    All the best

Whatever you read is wrong, carriers have been known to block TCP/IP ports so user can't access third party apps but that's about it.

    Re: Instant Messaging on 8707

I have read another thread about unblocking 8700's. I have followed the instructions on seeing which services if any are blocked and sure enough i get disabled for all optiond except NETWORK.

Is this something that would be preventing my access to the TCP/IP menu

When you say the three links above don't work, do you mean you can't browse to those pages or the software on those pages doesn't work?

Nope. This device really doesn't have a TCP/IP stack. Do a search on this forum or look in the BlackBerry KB using "8707". We're all waiting for a fix. The means of establishing connectivity is MDS on BES (or tethered to a laptop with its own IP stack).

    Re: Instant Messaging on 8707

    Hi,
I just received my 8707v yesterday.
I had previously a 8700... I'm almost starting to regret it as Yak-on (IM) was perfectly working on it...
When trying to transfer this appl. on my 8707 through the desktop manager, I quickly discoverd it was impossible to install (not recognised).
I made some search on Google and so far, nothing new on this subject...
I was asking , ... just in case...
    Thanks anyway.

    Re: Instant Messaging on 8707

    Really?
Do you mean you installed it directly from the 8707, without using the desktop manager?.
I should try this... Unfortunately, for the moment it seems I don't have acess to the web for the moment

    Fred
