Anieve, I believe the limit is set by the carrier. I don't believe there is a way to change it yourself.

2nd, set by carrier. No option to change this from the device.

    1. Change carriers
    2. Use something other than SMS

Re: How to Disable the SMS typing Limit?

Not much you can do about it. The SMS limit of 160 is pretty much a standard. And seeing that the address you're sending to counts as part of the 160, the messages get even shorter.

Some carriers have "extended" the limit, but what they're doing is picking apart your large message, programmatically breaking into smaller pieces, sending multiple messages then reassembling on the receiver's end, making it all appear as one message. If you know the receiver on the other end is the same carrier and a compatible device, you might get away with it, but if it doesn't work, the message likely won't go thru at all...at least thats my experience.

But, the 160 is really a standard across all carriers. If they didn't agree on a limit, you wouldn't be able to send SMS across carriers at all. I've heard there's some talk of extending the limit with the technology thats around today, but I haven't heard if anything is going to happen.

And one reason some carriers don't use the extension that transparently into multiple SMS messages is that they don't want the hassle of upset. Customers, not on unlimited plans complaining the 690 character they thought was sent as 1 message deducted 5 messages from their count because they didn't know that there is a 160 char limit on SMS.

    Hope this helps.

Re: How to Disable the SMS typing Limit?

Aww well, i had the motorola Q before i switched back to the blackberry and i sent more hten just the 160 chars so i don't think it would be the provider since i have the same provider.

    I'm with Telus.

Thanks a lot for the info.

Well, it could have been your Q that broke it up into 160 character chuncks and sent those as separate messages. But the International Standard is 160 Char.

I also had the PPC-6700 from Sprint before getting the 8703 and it would break up the text in 160 automactically, which was nice if you sent a long text. So it has to do with the BB that it doesn't let you send more than 160 for text.
