    Question Frustrating Flickering Screen

This will be my first thread and all information i have found so far has been of great help and has allowed me to grasp and cherish the true power this blackberry can possess. Now anyways onto the topic at hand. I have a 8703E jsut got it from a friend today and has been working well for months. I buyit off him and decide to go to the good ole cell phone providers store and get the number changed over and begin my new loving life with the blackberry. WE go through all the steps and out of no where the sales rep(not tech) put the BB in my face and says you ever seen that screen before? weird? It was the device error 348 with the reset text below. Frusterated but never giving up home i found you guys and began the quest to repair my new found friend.

Here is what i belive happened. Sales rep clears the phone and gets it prepped to get my number and it cratters. the operating system isn't functioning. So i got the destktop manager the jl commander and anything i can to wipe this thing clena and reload the new OS. Problem is i can't load the OS. My backberry will occasionaly get a quick connect. no lights turn on the keypad. the signal light is red and the screen will flicker. Now when it is connected to the computer Via USB is when this flickering occurs most often. it tuns in tandem with the sound the computerl ikes to make whenver it gets a connected device and when the device is unplugged. So i have no ability whatso ever to move material from computer to blackberry. i tried he intialization technique and i've tried the usb wipe but nothing .the closest i have come to any sort of comfort was when i took the battery out while the usb is plugged in and the screen comes up with a battery icon with a slash thru it.

Does anyone have ny ideas? I allready opened the thing up and scanned the electronics for any wear and tear, water damamge and corrosion. there is absoulutly nothing .mind you this thing ran like a champ with no connection of course for bout 4 hours before going into the hands of the wonderful verizon tech rep. Again i apologize if i went into to much detail but i figure if i throw all nessessary info out there on the 1st bid a better and more clear diagnosis can be made upon the matter. Thankyou all very much for your time, knowledge and efforts.

Please review this thread I started when I had a similar issue. Also, review this KB Article that discribes how to connect the BB to the PC when it won't boot: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/searc...200%2040770705

Make sure you have the current OS from Verizon loaded on your PC. You can download that here if you don't have it installed yet, be sure to choose the OS software not the DM software since you already have that.: http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry...px?ct=personal

    Hi Slick,

Has your situation changed from the last post? From what you describe I assume that your Desktop Manager is cycling between "connectected" and disconnected, is this correct?

Were you able to successfully complete the Java wipe with JL CMDR? And have you treid the steps to reinstall your OS when your device is not recognized?

Still no sign of inmprovment. Only getting worse. the red signal light now blinks in a code like fashion with 2 red blink then a pause then 2 red blinks a pause and is in a continuous loop. Other than that i'm not sure if i explained clearly the issue. Now you know when you plug your blackberry in and out in makes the connected and disconnect audio sound. Well i get that over and over again like its trying to read it but it can't. when i to the JL commander wipe or reset to factory spec it says i have a com error and that it had trouble connecting and couldn't findthe port. when i dothe application loader i get all the way to the part where it initializes and the beeping noises occur and says it couldn't connect. all and all i haven't yet to have a connected status through the application loader. Now when i go to device manager i can see the blackberry is recognized and all but it goes in and out like its reconnected and disconnected. i've thought maybe bad battery? I'm not to literate in blackberry since i had it in my hands in full working order for a total of 4 hours so this is usually my luck and we'll continue to see where it goes.

The disconnect/connect sound is just that, the PC finding and loosing the BB as it is in a reboot loop. Follow the directions in the KB article I posted. Keep in mind that it is very time sensitive and may take several attempts to catch the BB at the right time. After starting the DM software, click the application loader and then click next, do a battery pull and when you reconnect the battery quickly connect the BB to the USB (don't worry about the battery cover since you may have to redo if your not quick enough). When you see the PIN number appear in the DM application window, click next quickly. This should capture the BB and hold it so you can wipe and reload the OS.

Try and let me know if that works.

I'm running windows XP. NOw What does it mean when the signal light is blinking in those repetative intervals. it use to jsut blink once every now and then now its got a steady beat to it. Its driving me nuts. Anyways When the USb device is detected it its like its starting up and dying real quick. i guess that would best describe the symptoms. now trying to get it to be recognized by the programs ran onthe computer has yet to be a success. i'm thinking i'll have to take it to a repair place. I've taken it apart one last time and there are no abnormal findings.

    Re: Frustrating Flickering Screen

Allright here is the update as of now. Blackberrry is still out of commission. Me personally feeling sad. Lets shoot back to the basics and see if we can get somewhere with this . Now i'm not able to charge the blackberry. I have a car charger and i notice it not responding to it. I also have the USb cable. Will these 2 devices still charge in the statre it is in. (state being screen is black with signal light blinking in sequencial incraments. in RED) When the battery is out and plugged into the computer i get the screen to light up and stay lit with the battery symbol and a slash mark thru the battery. OK could the battery have anythign to do with this?

Next Maybe i am using the wrong software I have yet to get a connected status yet. Now when i do the hard wipe going to start and run the javaloader -usb wipe command it gives me 2 error messages. one being unable to open port the other being debug: COM error during open <0x80004004>

So i tried debug mode i tried all sorts of stuff that the javaloader could do if it could connect to the device. For some strange reason i am not and cannot get a connection. All the steps in all the applications are very easy to follow but this BB jsut doens't seem to want to get a solid connect tothe programs. Any other ideas? I'm still stuck here i've torn the BB apart looking for any kind of defects or damage and its clean as a whistle.

Now remind you i don't have a charger. could these symptoms point to a dead battery? When it is in the BB say i have a battery, no lights come on jsut the screen will blink (hense flickering) from time to time when not connected to the computer. when it is connected to the computer I get the responce from the Device manger saying hey i have a black berry in me but from all other software apps i get nothing. I hope this leads to a diagnosis i think we might be gettign a little closer and if anything you guys are really making me a lot smarter than i was 24 hours ago. thanks everyone updates and a definite how to is needed for when this gets completed.

    Re: Frustrating Flickering Screen

OK so the end result is as foloowed.. I began to think maybe a couple days in the car sitting there jsut to discharge would do the trick so i forgot about the blackberry....gosh what a horror i almost fell in love. anyways somethign new came up the charge screen when i plugged it in. and shortly afterwards the nightmare came back and its still stuck with its same symptoms. i called a few local techs and they said its fried and gone. So i think i'll randomly try new things to it and if i ever get it fixed i'll bring up a how to on it.
