    Desktop Addressbook?

Is it possible to view the contacts of a bb addressbook on a pc?

What im getting at is if I loose my bb (Horror!) then can I rescue all my contacts info and see them on pc,like my palm - the bb is all to happy to take my palm contacts for its own but can it go both ways? - also if I bought a new bb would it sink all my old details even if the pin was different.

I think all of these are important points in an age where phonr theft is escalating.

Thanks for the tome to think about this

If you sync with Outlook, then all your contacts will always be available.

James, there are several PIMs compatable with the BB/Desktop Manager (DM). Check out which ones, by opening DM and Clicking Sycnronization and then settings or configuration, depending on the version of DM you have. DM 4.2 will even sync with ASCII files so you can use an excel spreadsheet to manage contacts.

What if your company does not allow or load Desktop Mgr? Depending on the rank in my company, they give just the BB and not Desktop Mgr? How do you backup your contacts from the BB?

You can download the desktop mgr from blackberry and back things up yourself. Doesnt' even have to be on your work computer. I don't believe they can create a policy that would prevent that.

My BB has an IT policy on it. Will this method allow you to bypass the Policy to also install 3rd party software?

infernox, I seriously doubt it. And your contacts are backed up on the BES. They are maintained on your Email Server. If your BB messes up and your admins restore it, the contacts will be re-synced when you do a new Enterprise Activation.

And again, I wouldn't try looking for a way to get around your companies IT policies. They can detect it. Also, If the policy prohibits installation of third party Apps, it won't matter what PC you use. It's in the policy which is on the BB.

    Re: Desktop Addressbook?

Certainly wasn't advocating trying to circumvent it policies. As Rcbjr stated, if you are synching the Berry to your PIM via the BES everything should be tucked away nicely for you.
However, desktop manager isn't installed to the BB - it is a PC application that interfaces with the Berry. Unless there is a policy in place to prevent backups (not sure if you can even do that) then backing the BB up to another location is certainly "doable" - just not absolutely necessary.

As far as using a co.issued Blackberry for personal use, & modifying the configuration it's best to ask first.
Your job may depend on it.
