Depends on a few things. How do you intend to wipe your device? We can help you accomplish either one, restore with or without contacts...which do you want?

Unless you do a full backup prior to wiping the bb anything you have installed/saved will be wiped from the device as well.

Looks like Gary and I posted at the same time lol
I'll let him run with this, as he said it's possible to do it with or withour saving your data.

Ok, in a normal operating system install you are given the option to back up/ restore all of your data as a part of the process. If you want to be able to select what data bases you restore, try this....

    1. Use desktop manager to back up your device data bases
    2. Download and install the new operating system on your PC
    3. Use Application Loader to load the new operating system. When prompted (I think it is the first screen) select "Do Not Backup". This will install your new operating system without restoring your data bases.
    4. Once this is complete, use Back Up / Restore - Advanced and open your back up (use the File - Open command). There you can select the individual data bases you want to restore from the back up. If your sms messages are combined with your emails there may only be one data base for message (not sure), but if your SMS are separate you are able to restore just those messages.

    Post back any questions!

    Hi Gary,

Thank u so much for your help. I think I have the latest OS installed now, would I still need to download the latest one? The version Im running now is 4.2.1.107. So this would allow me to keep all my contacts in blackberry messenger and all saved text messages? I'm kinda nervous about wiping everything because I have a lot of important text msgs and contacts in my blackberry messenger that would make it impossible for me to add again. Thanks for all your help!

Ok, I just misunderstood your intention in your first post. There is a newer OS, your choice if you want to install it or not. If you wish, you can make a back up, then use the device wipe (Options / Security/ General / Menu/ Wipe Handheld) to wipe your data bases and then restore the selected data bases as described.

If you are nervous, you can check the back up data base size first to compare to the device data base size (before you wipe) and confirm that all are the same.

Is there some thing specific you want to wipe off the device? There are other options that would not completely wipe the device. There is also JL_Cmder which will wipe your device completly, including the operating system (sort of like formating your hard drive)

Here is the newest OS for the 8700:You may use any carriers OS if you delete the vendor.xml file after you install on your desktop.

Just let us know if you need more help.

    Hi,

No there isn't anything I need to wipe off, my BES linked messages has been deleting itself every 2-3 days even though I have about 20,976,020 Bytes of free memory. I was told that I had to reformat it from t-mobile, thats Y I have no choice but to try and reformat the blackberry, Thanks so much for all your help!

just to recap, here are your choices:

    1. Device Wipe (clears all data bases)
    2. Install new operating system (wipes all data and operating system off the phone)
    3. Java Wipe and re-install same operating system (same result as #2 but a bit more complicated.

In any event just make sure you have a good back up before starting.

Thanks Gary for all your help again.

I just downloaded the new OS in your link. My question is how do I install that new OS? or does the blackberry pick up the new OS itself when I reformat everything?

After you download it, you need to launch the application you DL'd in order to install it on your desktop. Then go to this folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
And delete the file called vendor.xml
Now you can run desktop manager / application loader and it will ask you if you want to upgrade. Again you can either choose to upgrade with a back up restore or without. Either way just to be safe I would back up first.

No you're fine. It will load itself when you install it (run the file you downloaded to install the OS on your PC)
