Blackberry Maps and No GPS with AT&T

Does anyone know if the AT&T blackberrys really do not have a GPS or if it is turned off? I know what the BB map application said before I loaded it but I LOVE maps so I did it anyway and it is really sweet. You can look up a person in your address book and find the place on the map but since the GPS is not there, you can't use it to find your way there unless you enter where you are.

The purpose of the mapping application is to work as a GPS mapping system that would guide you to it. I went into the system settings and found the GPS part that said it was not on and there is no option to turn it on.

Does that mean that with this particular BB, even emergency personnel could never locate me if need be? I realize that is a silly "what if", but it just seems like an important part to leave off of such an intricate device.

I only use Google maps new version.

Faux GPS via cell tower triangulation.

Pretty accurate for me. Finds your location within 1700 meters I think.

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

the GPS option is there if you use a external gps receiver. Google Maps works well but is obviously not that accurate if you use the My Location without a GPS.

yep, you need a receiver to get it to work. the 8310s have all gps functions built in.

The google map worked and even found my location immediately. It is pretty cool. The only thing I liked better in the BB map is the ability to find the location from the address book. If the internal GPS were there, it would give directions and update route location.

Google does traffic though. That's pretty sweet.

I have a nice handheld Garmin iQuest with vehicle cradle so I didn't have to have this...just wanted it. LOL!

    Thanks!
