    8703 4.2 deletion question

How's it going every body had question for you guys. I have a Verzion 8703e and I'm currently using OS 4.2 which I upgraded to after purchase. When I was still using 4.1 after I first got my BB I had the ability to delete the backgrounds that came with the phone. But upon upgrading to 4.2 I lost that ability there is now a little lock symbol in the corner of the pictures and I have no idea how to unlock them so I can delete them. And they do not show up in the advanced application list as delete able items. Can anyone shine some light on this form me?

    Thank you in advanced.

    Re: 8703 4.2 deletion question

You can delete the preloaded pictures by deleting the files: net_rim_bb_media_240x260_b.cod and net_rim_bb_media_100_240x260.cod if presnt in the java folder located here: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\<your OS version>\Java
You can also scan the BlackBerry.alx file and remove the text there for the corresponding files.

Be sure to back up your BB and create a backup of the BlackBerry.alx file and copy the .cod files to another folder so you have them to reinstall if needed. Then run DM and walk through the app loader and it should remove the images.

Let me know if this works

Both of these have to be done from the BB desktop manager correct?

You remove the files from the PC in the folder I specified, and the text from the BlackBerry.alx file on the PC, then run Desktop Manager and walk through the app loader.

I just wanted to say thank you for all of your help but I don't understand all the technical terms. I guess not so much that but I don't understand where all this stuff is located.

Well I started to write a long drawn out explination but I figure it would be easier if you located the BlackBerry.alx file on your PC by doing a search and email it to me. I could modify it and send it back with the desired files edited out.

PM me if you want to do that.

Have you tried disabling content protection under options>security options>general settings ,if I'm not mistaken. Then go back to your background folder and the individual lil'locks should be unlocked, delete.

That does not work that way. I do not have content protection enabled yet mine are still locked.

    Re: 8703 4.2 deletion question

Here is the definition from the BB user guide:

    About content protection and compression
Content protection is designed to encrypt your
BlackBerry® device data. When your device is
password locked, an open lock in the device status
section of the screen indicates that encryption is in
progress. A closed lock indicates that encryption is
complete. After you type your device password, data
on your device is decrypted as you access it.
To use content protection, you must set a device
    password.

Not misguided... we are all here to learn!
