I have the MyTether program on my pre and tethering with my laptop works great! I get the same speeds that I used to have with Qwest DSL on the 1.5 Megabit connection.

Thanks,
Will Sprint charge extra for data usage?

You do need a data plan through Sprint for this to work and a data plan is required to have the Palm Pre (it won't work without it just like Android or any other smart phone).

The MyTether program that I use is a hack - I had to root the phone to install MyTether and had to enable the dormant UsbNet program on the Pre.

I do not get charged extra for data for doing this, but I'm not sure how long I will get away with doing this either. Sprint and Palm definitely don't endorse it, but this is what happens when you have a device that is open to the public for development.
