I've heard a lot of rumors that PALM and RIM are going to come together with the Treo 700p and offer BB connect on the 700p. Can anyone let me know if this is true or not?

Yes, RIM is finishing up work on BB connect for the Treo line of products. It will be available for the 700w, and later on for the 700p.

Ye, its the instant email and pin messenger on a palm, but its not quite finished yet and for the 1st few releases, as with all systems, will prolly be a little buggy.

I thought you don't have PIN messaging on other devices.

BB connect does provide you with a pin. Its built into the software, almost like a hard coded pin on a berry.

BBConnect devices don't support PIN messages. And the PIN assigned to a BBConnect device comes from the BlackBerry Network, not the device software. It's tied to the IMEI of the device.

As tested by my source, the 700w BB connect does infact do P2P PIN messaging. This would lead me to believe PIN messaging is in fact supported. I will talk to "him" about how the PIN is assigned, as I am 99 percent certain its assigned, by the network, but using the software rather then hardware. Not all devices have an IMEI, so this wouldnt be acceptable for future BB connect devices.

Re: BB connect on Palm Treo 700p

Pin2Pin isn't supported by BBConnect devices. You can receive PIN messages which arrive as SMS messages but you can't reply by PIN - only by SMS.

The PIN is associatied to the IMEI or the ESN. ALL mobile devices have a hardware identifier such as an IMEI or an ESN. These are unique to the device just like a BlackBerry PIN. The device registers on the BlackBerry network with it's IMEI/ESN and a PIN of 0. If the IMEI/ESN fall in to certain partner-associated ranges, the BlackBerry network forwards the request to RIMs Provisioning system. Provisioning looks in its database to see if it already knows the IMEI. If it does, it sends it back the PIN that was previously assigned. If it's never seen the device before it sends it a new PIN, the next one in the DPA queue, and the device executes another registration using this PIN to get services.

Because of the way DPA works, you can't, for example, get the same PIN that you had if you have to send your device away for repair. Because of the this and many other factors, the BBConnect client doesn't support P2P.
