Refurbished iPhones are an excellent source of previous users' data

Here's a slightly disturbing story from iPhone Atlas. Apparently user data is recoverable from iPhones that are being sold as refurbished. A detective from the Oregon State police recovered email, photos, and other user data from an "out-of-the-box refurbished iPhone." Indeed the image to the right is a partial screen capture from the refurbished iPhone.

The biggest reason for all this though is not apples fault, its actually at&t. IF you purchase an iphone you have 14 days to return it and get your money back (minus a 15% re-stocking fee) but then what att does is just look at the phone and if it is cosmetically in good shape they "try" to restore it to factory settings, thus deleting all the previous user information. this is where att is slacking. They are missing a lot of these "refurbished" iphones and they are getting back out into the world pretty much EXACTLY as the previous user had it. Think of it this way: its as though you bought an iphone and you decided to sell it, so you put it in the box and sell it to someone else, WITHOUT changing anything on the phone, so all of your info (contacts, emails, music, etc) are still on the device.....

EDIT: read the link, it explained just what i said, sorry.....

Actually ERR!!! Incorrect. they get shipped back to our distribution center where then they get shipped back to Cupertino, Calif and are supposed to get scrubbed of all user data and then get resent back to ATT for sale again. Which is why they are sealed in special bags even when they are returned.

As with any piece of electronic equipment, if you have ever had sensitive data you don't want found stored on it at one point, when decommissioning it from your use, destroy it.

Actually ATT is the only one that recycles phones , apple does not have anything to do with those phones , ATT does stick them back in the box . I know this because I work for apple
