Lets post our findings & questions on how the GV Mobile app, etc are working with the iPhone here. I have installed the app through cydia, and today bookmarked the mobile website (which seems pretty cool). Still trying to figure out the best way to SMS with this and make it free....

I don't have a JB'n phone so I've been using the Web site via Safari. I've been sending SMS from there. Some seem to go through and work and others do not.

I do not like the Web App icon it looks generic w/text. I'm trying to figure out another way to get the icon I like but with the correct shortcut url.

The web site interface through Safari works fine for me. My only complaint is the text box and the text is too tiny and I cant read what I typed (and no zoom).

Here is what I am seeing. I sent a SMS from the web site. The reply ALSO shows in the native SMS app. Does yours?

    Very confusing....

I'm still waiting on a few reply's. I just sent out 5 text messages to different people. I will post back in a few minutes after getting reply's. I'm wondering if the texts are showing up as coming from my iPhone number or the GV number? They won't know or recognize my GV number.

The SMS are going thru but showing up as coming from my GV phone number. So a few people thought it was spam.
Once they add that number to their address book in my contact information it shows from me as normal.

I will be interested in hearing how the replies come back. Mine come with some strange # in Montana, even though I am texting California.

When they reply to my GV SMS text it goes to GV and not the phone. So to read it I have to use the GV web site. I was hoping they would show on my phone. Since you actually have the phone App does that change anything? Does the App handle things differently?

they go to the native messaging app rather than the GV mobile app for me, but that is because I have it forwarded to my cell number. If you dont have it forwarding to a cell number they go to the app, only real reason I use GV on is so I dont have to give out my personal number and it gives me the option to screen calls for when people contact me about my site.

I'm leaning towards what Neo says in that both his phone and yours Gary, are JB. The guide that I borrowed and changed around for non-iPhone users was written because of the lack of push notifications. If all else fails for you Steve, try this here.

I looked over that and while it's sound it's also a tangled mess just to get something to work. I don't need it that bad so I'm going to wait it out. I should update my Profile to read "Seamless & Minimal".

    Hope that makes sense?

As a side note, I think we will actually see GV back in the App Store. I'm not sure how soon (maybe when the AT$T exclusive is over). I'll keep messing with it since I have an extra phone or two but on my main daily use phone I'm passing for now on the work-a-rounds.

Hope so man. It's a great service. I read today that Apple approved a GMail push application from Google, so maybe Apple is starting to lighten up a little.

I am still struggling with the SMS portion of this. I turned off SMS notifications, yet when I send a GV SMS message the reply shows up in my native SMS application (and results in charges I believe)

I have installed the Growl/Prowl push workaround which does seem to be working but cant really test it yet until I can get these messages disabled.

    What am I missing?

Also anyone else using Prowl? Does it need to be forced to run in the "background"?
